A lenticular lens having an array of elongate lenticular elements extending parallel to one another, the array having a first edge and a second edge extending parallel to the elongate lenticular elements; and a central line that is centered between the first edge and the second edge; characterized in that the focal length of the lenticular elements gradually decreases from the first edge of the array towards the central line as well as from the second edge of the array towards the central line. This improves the angular performance of the lenticular lens, so that at short viewing distances the image quality near the edges of the display is not impaired.

A multi-view display is switchable between single view and multi-view modes, and uses lenticular means () arranged over the display panel which comprise birefringent electro-optic material () adjacent a non-switchable optically transparent layer (). The non-switchable optically transparent layer () has a refractive index (n) substantially equal to the extra ordinary refractive index of the birefringent electro-optic material (). In the single view mode, the birefringent electro-optic material () defines a non-switched state, and the polarization () of the light output from the display panel and incident on the lenticular means is linear and aligned with the optical axis of the birefringent electro-optic material () at the surface where the display output light is received. In the multi-view mode, the birefringent electro-optic material () defines a switched state in which the optical axis is aligned perpendicularly to the display output surface.

The invention relates to a method for reducing moire patterns on an autostereoscopic display, which display comprises an array of pixels, each having at least one sub-pixel corresponding to a main color, lined with a view altering layer, such as a lenticular lens stack or parallax barrier, and wherein the display further comprises an eye tracking system for determining the position of the eyes of a viewer relative to the display, which method comprises the steps of: &#x2014;moire pattern detection by repeating for each main color the steps of: +activating the sub-pixels of all pixels corresponding to the single main color; obtaining moire pattern data by observing the display from a plurality of viewing positions; determining from the obtained moire pattern data the frequency, phase, direction and amplitude of the moire pattern for each of the viewing positions and storing the determined values; &#x2014;controlling the pixels of the autostereoscopic display to display images, wherein the controlling comprises at least the steps of: determining the viewing position of the eyes of a viewer using the eye tracking system; rendering 3D images from image data, while correcting the 3D images by superimposing a compensation pattern for each main color, which pattern is generated based on the stored values and the determined viewing position to reduce the moire pattern for said viewing position.

Method for reducing moire patterns on an autostereoscopic display

The invention relates to a method for reducing crosstalk on an autostereoscopic display, wherein the display comprises an array of pixels lined with a view altering layer, such as a lenticular lens stack or parallax barrier, which display further comprises an eye tracking system for determining the position of the eyes of a viewer relative to the display, which method comprises the steps of: &#x2014;defining a common nonlinear physical model for a view altering layer portion corresponding to a pixel or group of pixels, which nonlinear physical model has at least one variable for the position of the respective pixel or group of pixels relative to the display, a variable for the viewing position of the eyes of a viewer relative to the display and parameters related to the variables; &#x2014;calibrating the autostereoscopic display by repeating for all pixels or group of pixels of the display, the steps of: +obtaining calibration data by observing the visibility of a pixel or group of pixels from at least two viewing positions; +fitting the calibration data on the nonlinear physical model for the respective view altering layer portion to obtain the parameters related to the variables; and +storing the parameters for the respective view altering layer portion; &#x2014;controlling the pixels of the autostereoscopic display to display 3D images, wherein the controlling comprises at least the steps of: +determining the viewing position of the eyes of a viewer using the eye tracking system; +rendering 3D images from image data taking into account the position of the pixels or group of pixels relative to the viewing position, while correcting the 3D images per pixel or group of pixels using the common nonlinear physical model and the stored parameters for the view altering layer portion corresponding to the pixel of group of pixels.

Method for reducing crosstalk on an autostereoscopic display

A multi-view display is switchable between single view and multi-view modes, and uses lenticular arrangement over a display panel which includes birefringent electro-optic material adjacent to a non-switchable optically transparent layer. The non-switchable optically transparent layer has a refractive index substantially equal to the extra ordinary refractive index of the birefringent electro-optic material. In the single view mode, the birefringent electro-optic material defines a non-switched state, and the polarization of the light from the display panel and incident on the lenticular arrangement is linear and aligned with the optical axis of the birefringent electro-optic material at the surface where the display output light is received. In the multi-view mode, the birefringent electro-optic material defines a switched state in which the optical axis is aligned perpendicularly to the display output surface.

A method of driving a display uses first and second illumination cycles of the display. In each cycle, a first set of pixels is illuminated with a first color and a second set of pixels is illuminated with a second color. The first and second colors of the two cycles together include at least three colors for forming an image. This method provides a sequential drive scheme, in that at least two cycles are used with different color properties. However, each cycle uses at least two different colors, so that each cycle is not a single color across the whole display area. In this way, the color sequence is alternated spatially as well as temporally.

Displays with sequential drive schemes

There is disclosed an optical beam deflection arrangement which may be used in an autostereoscopic display device. The arrangement comprises a substrate; a first layer, for example formed of an optically isotropic solid and having a curved surface facing towards the substrate; and a second layer, for example formed of a liquid crystal material confined between the substrate and the first layer. An interface between the first and second layers may, for example, define an array of parallel lenticulars. A refractive index of the second layer, for light of a predetermined polarization, maybe switchable between a first value matching the refractive index of the first layer and a second value different to the refractive index of the first layer, to thereby selectably provide a beam deflection function. The substrate is spaced from the first layer by a plurality of spacers which are extended from the substrate or from the first layer, the spacers making point or line contact with the other one of the substrate and the first layer. The spacers may comprise elongate spacers having a length direction parallel to the plane of the substrate. The substrate and the first layer may be formed of flexible plastics materials, in which case the arrangement may be manufactured using roll-to-roll processing techniques.

Optical beam deflection arrangement and multi-view display having the same

The invention provides an autostereoscopic display device in which a viewer tracking system determines a position of a viewer with respect to the display panel. The display panel is controlled to display a number of different views which is dependent on at least the distance of the viewer from the display panel. This enables the number of views to optimized with respect to the position and/or speed of movement of the viewer.

Autostereoscopic display device and drive method

An autostereoscopic display device comprises a display () having an array of display pixels () and a view forming arrangement () of elongate elements which have a long axis which is slanted at an angle &#x3b1; to the column pixel direction, and the elements have a pitch of P times the width between pixels of the same color in different columns. The pitch P is selected to be: P=0.5&#xb7;k&#xb7;(1+S) in which S=tan &#x3b1;, and k is a positive integer. This arrangement enables the resulting image projected in respect of each view to have a uniform and regular distribution of pixels across the image. This improves the visual appearance of the views.

Autostereoscopic display device

A switchable autostereoscopic display device comprises a display panel () and an imaging arrangement (for directing the output from different pixels to different spatial positions to enable a stereoscopic image to be viewed. The imaging arrangement comprises a blue phase LC material. A controller switches the blue phase material to an isotropic state for the 2D mode and to a birefringent state for the 3D mode. This arrangement enables a switchable lens arrangement to be formed without alignment layers. This can give a high angle performance thin switchable arrangement.
