A quadrature out-phasing system comprising: a first baseband signal modifier () arranged to receive a first baseband signal component () and output a first constant envelope RF carrier () and a second constant envelope RF carrier (); and a second baseband signal modifier () arranged to receive a second baseband signal component () and output a third constant envelope RF carrier () and a fourth constant envelope RF carrier (). The system may further comprise: a first signal combiner () arranged to combine the first constant envelope RF carrier () and the second constant envelope RF carrier (), and arranged to output a first RF PWM signal (); and a second signal combiner () arranged to combine the third constant envelope RF carrier () and the fourth constant envelope RF carrier (), and arranged to output a second RF PWM signal ().

Decomposer and amplifier

A transmitter () comprises a first Chireix compensation circuit () and a second Chireix compensation circuit (), wherein each Chireix compensation circuit has two inputs and two outputs. Two constant envelope input signals () to be amplified are guided by a switch () to either the first or second Chireix amplifier unit. The selection as such depends on the phase () of the input signals to be amplified. The outputs of the two Chireix compensation circuits are cross-coupled to an inductive load (). A Chireix inductor () and a Chireix capacitor (), each having one terminal grounded, are also connected to the inductive load (). By switching the signals to be amplified in response to their phase, optimum matching is ensured.

The apparatus comprises at least two amplifying units each configured to amplify one of the two modulated signals.

Transmitter with reduced power consumption and increased linearity and dynamic range

A baseband signal generator () provides a polar signal (A, I p) to a processing sub-unit (). The processing sub-unit () receives furthermore feedback signals from a down converting unit () which feedback signals are used to determine the magnitude (B) of the amplified output signal and the actual error phase. The magnitude (A) of the polar signal and the determined magnitude (B) are applied to a comparator () having its output connected to the input of a predistortion unit (). The output of the predistortion unit () is connected to the input of a pulse width modulating unit () which comprises a mapping unit () outputting two constant magnitude signals. The actual error phase and the phase component of the polar signal are used to generate a corrected phase component which is applied to a further mapping unit () forming part of a phase modulating unit (). The output signals of this phase modulating unit () are applied to the pulse width modulating unit () providing finally two pulse width pulse position modulated signals. These signals are applied to the switching amplifier ().

Transmitter comprising a pulse width pulse position modulator and method thereof

An apparatus comprising a signal generator for generating a polar representation of a signal. The apparatus comprises further a first filtering unit configured to filter a low frequency part of the amplitude component of said signal and a second filtering unit configured to filter a high frequency-part of the amplitude component of said signal. In addition, the apparatus includes a pulse width modulating unit configured to modulate the filtered high frequency part of the amplitude component of said signal together with the phase component of said signal. Finally the apparatus includes a DC-DC converter configured to convert the filtered low frequency part of the amplitude component of said signal. Said DC-DC converter supplies a switching mode power amplifier for amplifying the pulse width modulated signal.

Power amplifier

Method for setup of parameter values in a RF power amplifier circuit arrangement (), wherein the amplifier circuit arrangement () comprises a first () and a second () amplification branch and is operated in an out-phasing configuration for amplification of RF input signals with modulated amplitude and modulated phase and respective circuit arrangements are disclosed. According to a first aspect a re-optimization of the dead-time or conversely the duty-cycle, respectively, the phase of the output signal after the combiner can be kept linear with respect to the out-phasing angle. Further, according to a second aspect, additionally to introduction of an optimally chosen dead-time, a non-coherent combiner (Lx, Lx*) can reduce crowbar current and switching losses due the output capacitance (Cds). Furthermore, according to a third aspect the reactive compensation can, additionally or alternatively, be controlled by operating both amplification branches at different duty-cycles.

Efficient linear LINC power amplifier

Various embodiments relate to a reconfigurable integrated digital Chireix out-phasing power amplifier for use in high power base stations is described and a related method of said design. The power amplifier may include a power transistor circuitry having plurality of power transistors and shunt-series circuitry (LC, LC), a broadband combiner having Chireix compensation elements, and an impedance matching filter. The power transistor circuitry, the broadband combiner, and the impedance matching filter are integrated in a unified package. In one embodiment, the power amplifier is implemented in a real switch-mode to facilitate integration of the Chireix compensation elements so as to make the Chireix power amplifier tunable. A method of driving Chireix power amplifier structure is also described.

Reconfigurable outphasing Chireix amplifiers and methods

Various embodiments relate to a reconfigurable integrated digital Chireix out-phasing power amplifier for use in high power base stations is described and a related method of said design. The power amplifier may include a power transistor circuitry having plurality of power transistors and shunt-series circuitry (LC, LC), a broadband combiner having Chireix compensation elements, and an impedance matching filter. In one embodiment, the power amplifier is implemented in a real switch-mode to facilitate integration of the Chireix compensation elements so as to make the Chireix power amplifier tunable. A method of driving Chireix power amplifier structure is also described. In some embodiments, a variable supply voltage may power the transistor circuitry based on the desired output power of the Chireix power amplifier. In some embodiments, the variable supply voltage may depend upon an out-phasing angle between the two drivers in the transistor circuitry.

Power control of reconfigurable outphasing chireix amplifiers and methods

A system and method for Cartesian modulation achieved via generation of a three-level pulse width modulated signal. The system in overview comprises two binary pulse width modulated signal generators receiving signals related to the in-phase and quadrature components of a base-band signal and a combination and amplification stage that combines the signals provided by the two binary pulse width modulated signal generators. The binary pulse width modulated signal generators contain at least one signal comparator and at least one base-band pre-distortion element. The signals related to the in-phase and quadrature components of the base-band signal may be; the positive or negative parts of the in-phase component, the positive or negative parts of the quadrature component, the absolute value or sign of the in-phase component, or the absolute value or sign of the quadrature component. These signals may be distorted by a base-band pre-distortion element before being coupled to the comparators.

Cartesian modulation system via multi-level pulse width modulation

The present invention relates to a circuit arrangement and method of applying predistortion to a baseband signal used for modulating a pulse-shaped signal, wherein an envelope information of the baseband signal is detected and slewing distortions of the pulse-shaped signal are reduced by applying at least one of a phase modulation and a duty cycle 5 modulation to the baseband signal as additional predistortion in response to the detected envelope information. Thereby, slewing distortions in the pulse-shaped signal are removed or at least reduced.

Enhanced predistortion for slewing correction

The present invention relates in general to transferring the envelope information of a polar modulated signal to a varying pulsewidth signal, while the phase modulation is direct transferred to the phase modulation of this PWM signal. Accordingly, the resultant signal is a PWM-PPM-signal. Such a signal can efficiently amplified by use of switching amplifying stages. By the present invention four pre-distorted baseband signals are applied basically to 4 linear RF mixers and a two adders, which are, the only needed external RF building blocks to build the modulator according to the invention. That is, the basic idea of the invention resides in the way of modulation of the four baseband signals and the way of combining of the RF modulated signals.
