The present disclosure addresses limitations in ferritic materials. In at least one aspect, the present disclosure provides core-shell nanoparticles exhibiting improved characteristics for implementations and adoptability in numerous applications. Further aspects of the disclosure provide core-shell nanoparticles for use in electronic, magnetic and electro-magnetic applications. Still, other aspects of the present disclosure provide core-shell nanoparticles for a thermochemical water-splitting reaction resulting in increased Hvolume generation during multiple thermochemical cycles.

Thermally stabilized redox materials and applications thereof

Disclosed herein are pyrophoric composite materials comprising nanoporous pyrophoric alpha iron nanoparticles dispersed in a ceramic matrix for use as aerial decoys. The composite material is prepared using tape casting methods to produce a thin film. The iron precursor in the film is then activated by reduction under a hydrogen atmosphere. The composite nanoporous pyrophoric alpha iron nanoparticles and ceramic material is an improvement over current pyrophoric decoys as it eliminates the use of harmful chemicals and the need for a substrate to support the composite.

Composites of porous pyrophoric iron and ceramic and methods for preparation thereof

An improved method for the production of pyrophoric materials which does not employ hot NaOH and produces pyrophoric materials on various types of ceramic, metal, nanomaterial substrates. The method impregnates the substrate materials with pyrophoric iron or other materials resulting in materials that are 'tunable' with respect to its pyrophoric output as determined by its temperature, rise time sustenance etc through selective variation of particle size, morphology, and diluents or reactive materials.

Pyrophoric materials and methods of making same

An apparatus and process for making thermite compositions. The process includes providing a fuel-based slurry and at least one oxidizer-based slurry, formulating combination of fuel-based slurry and oxidizer-based slurry in a solvent to a desired energetic dose depending on nanocomposites' use, circulating the fuel-based slurry/oxidizer-based slurry combination in a mixing device operating semi-continuously during mixing and dispensing cycles forming a homogeneous mixed slurry, agitating ultrasonically or by high shear rate mixers the mixed slurry, and drying of the mixed slurry forming compact structures.

Aluminum-based nanothermites and processes of making the same

A novel pyrotechnic delay composition for use in metal delay fuse cartridges, including as its primary constituent Si&#x2014;Al&#x2014;FeOprepared from powdered form. The delay composition yields a progressive burning zone and burns substantially gas-free, is safe to handle, is resistant to moisture and degradation over time, can be incorporated within the confines of existing detonator shells, and poses no environmental hazards.

Non-toxic pyrotechnic delay compositions

A method is disclosed for preparing metastable nanoenergetic composites (MNC) and for wet loading those MNCs into percussion primer cups. The method involves dispersing nanosize reactants in an inert liquid or, alternatively, making a nanosize reactant surface modification for improvement of reactant's chemical inertness towards water, followed by application of additives supporting a solid reactant particle dispersion in water or water solution prior to mixing. After mixing of the reactants, one maintains the presence of liquid water together within an energetic material in order to enhance safety during pre-loading of the primer mixture into the primer cups and during the final drying.

Wet processing and loading of percussion primers based on metastable nanoenergetic composites

The present invention is a lead-free pyrotechnic composition comprising from about 60 percent by weight to about 80 percent by weight iodine pentoxide and from about 15 percent by weight to about 35 percent by weight of a solid-powder fuel. The solid-powder fuel may normally be selected from aluminum, magnesium, or a combination thereof. Depending upon the potential use for the lead-free pyrotechnic composition of the present invention, the composition may also include from about 4 to 10 percent by weight of a stabilizer that neutralizes any iodic acid formed by the iodine pentoxide, from about 3 to 5 percent by weight of a binder, or from about 5 to 15 percent by weight of a coloring agent. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the aluminum will comprise aluminum flake having a size ranging from about nanometers to about 100 nanometers.
