In response to receipt of a write input-output operation (IOP) including a logical address and a logical page of write data, control logic of a data storage system detects a presence of a data pattern in the logical page. In response to detecting the presence of the data pattern in the logical page of write data, the control logic records, in a logical-to-physical translation data structure, an association between the logical address and a data pattern identifier identifying the detected data pattern in the bulk storage media, refrains from writing the logical page of write data to the bulk storage media, and writes logical page metadata describing the logical page of write data to the bulk storage media. The logical page metadata includes at least the logical address and the data pattern identifier, such that contents of the logical-to-physical translation data structure can be recovered from the bulk storage media.

Systems and methods to manage memory are provided. A particular method may include storing data in a primary memory that is in communication with a processor and storing in a mirrored data in a mirrored memory. The mirrored data may be compressed, and the mirrored memory may be in communication with the processor. A failure condition associated with the data of the primary memory may be detected. In response to the detected failure condition, the mirrored data in the mirrored memory may be accessed.

According to one embodiment, an apparatus for providing node redundant power to a system includes a plurality of devices, with each device including a power supply. Each power supply includes a first direct current (DC) input coupled to a first input of an OR logic gate, and a second DC input representing by an alternating current (AC) input. The second DC input is coupled to a second input of the OR logic gate, and at least one DC output is coupled to an output of the OR logic gate. Each power supply also includes a backup power supply for supplying a voltage coupled to a common node. The OR logic gate provides DC voltage to the DC output to power the system from the first DC input only when voltage from the AC input is not available.

Systems and methods that provide power redundancy to a computer system without increasing the number of independent power supplies used. A system having N computing modules may have power redundancy using N power supplies, where each of the N power supplies are able to supply more power than required by an associated computing module, and where all but one (N&#x2212;1) of the power supplies collectively can immediately supply power to any one of the computing modules when the power supply associated with that computing module fails.

An interrogative password method is provided in response to an incorrect entry of the primary password. The primary password is recoverable in response to a successful execution of the interrogative password method. The primary password is recoverable from the server computer system by the client computer system prior to said client computer system completing said boot process utilizing the interrogative password method.

A method and system for reconfiguring a multi-dimension sound system is disclosed. The method and system include a remote control that is capable of emitting a low-frequency sound wave pulse pattern, and a plurality of speakers, wherein each speaker includes a pulse counter that counts a number of sound wave pulses received from the remote control over a predetermined time period. The method and system further include an audio receiver that includes a digital audio encoding system. The receiver uses the respective sound wave pulse count from each of the speakers to compute the distance between the remote control and each speaker, and programs the digital audio encoding system with speaker delay times based on the computed distances.

The display of a notebook computer includes a privacy filter extending over the display screen to limit the viewing angle within which the image on the screen can be discerned. To allow for normal viewing when the privacy feature is not required, the privacy filter is movable from the screen by sliding into a cavity extending from one side of the screen to be rolled onto a roller or to be stored partly behind the screen. Alternately, a privacy filter is provided that is electrically switchable between a mode in which the viewing angle is limited and a mode in which normal viewing is permitted. The movable privacy filter includes closely spaced louvers surrounded by clear plastic or, alternately, a polarizer. The switchable privacy filter includes a liquid crystal device and a polarizer.

A method and system for eliminating peripheral device conflicts in a multibus data-processing system which includes a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) plus having multiple slots for interconnecting peripheral devices in an automatically derived configuration and an Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus having multiple slots for interconnecting peripheral devices in a user-selected configuration. Each slot included within the ISA bus includes a reset line for temporarily disabling an associated slot in response to an application of electrical power to the data-processing system in order to prevent power transition problems. In response to an existing or potential device conflict brought about by a user-selected configuration, a control signal is selectively applied to the reset line for one or more slots included within the ISA bus, temporarily disabling those slots during normal operation of the data-processing system.

Multiple PCI adapter cards are supported by a single PCI slot through the aspects of the present invention. A computer system aspect includes an &mgr;ATX planar including at least one PCI slot, and a riser card mounted in the at least one PCI slot, the riser card supporting multiple PCI adapter cards and providing signal generation to allow the multiple PCI adapter cards to utilize the at least one PCI slot. The riser card aspect includes a PCI connector for coupling to a PCI slot on the &mgr;ATX planar, a plurality of PCI slots for attaching a plurality of PCI adapter cards, and a logic device for providing separate bus signal pairs to each of the plurality of PCI adapter cards from a single signal pair of the PCI slot on the &mgr;ATX planar.

Described is a computer system which is coupled to a remote computer via a network cable. The computer system has a normally closed enclosure and is capable of securing data retained within the system against unauthorized access and notifying the remote computer when an unauthorized access has occurred. The computer system includes an erasable memory element mounted within the enclosure for selective activation to active and inactive states and for receiving and storing a security password when in the active state. A manually operable option switch is mounted within the enclosure. The option switch is manually settable by a user of the computer system for setting the memory element to the active and inactive states. A tamper detection switch is mounted within the enclosure and operatively connected with the memory element for detecting opening of the enclosure and for generating a tamper alert signal and clearing any stored security password from the memory element in response to any switching of the tamper switch. The computer system further includes a network connector which is operative to receive the tamper alert signal and upon so receiving, transmit an alert packet over the communication line to the remote computer. The alert packet contains an alert message and information which specifically identifies the computer system.
