An article (2) in which at least part of a surface (8) of a polymeric element has an embossed pattern (6). The article may be either heat-recoverable or non-heat-recoverable. If the article is heat-recoverable, when heated the article recovers and the embossed surface becomes substantially smooth. The change in surface texture can be used to indicate that sufficient heat has been applied to the article to achieve adequate recovery and/or to adequately melt an attached adhesive layer (10). In another embodiment, the article (2) is in the form of a patch (14) which can be used to secure the opposing longitudinal edges of heat-recoverable article which is in the form of a wraparound sheet.

Heat-recoverable article

A gel or gelloid composition contains (a) more than 50% by weight (based on total polymer content) of a block copolymer containing relatively hard blocks and relatively elastomeric blocks; (b) a polyphenylene ether; and (c) at least 500 parts by weight of an extender liquid per 100 parts by weight of the block copolymer, which liquid extends and softens the elastomeric blocks of the block copolymer. The polyphenylene ether is present in an amount sufficient to increase the softening or melting temperature of the gel or gelloid composition over that of the same composition without polyphenylene ether. The gel or gelloid composition is useful for sealing applications.

An electrical connector, particularly an insulation-displacement connector of split-beam design, comprising a metal that at constant temperature has an elasticity of at least 0.8%. This allows the connector to be used with conductors over a large diameter range.

Device for disconnectably connecting cable wires

The invention comprises a telecommunications terminal block with integral but separate test port captured cap feature as well as a method of manufacturing same in an automated fashion. The block permits the electric connection of various size gauges of wires without the severing of the smallest gauges of wire or ruining the block when initially contacting on the largest gauge wire.

A telecommunications splice case comprises a flexible sheet that can be wrapped around the splice and optionally further surrounded by a rigid casing. The sheet has a heat-activatable sealing material at its edge and an electrical heater for activation.

Cable splice case

An electrical heater suitable for heating a hot-melt adhesive to seal a cable splice case. The heater is in strip form and comprises a conductive polymer between two electrodes. The conductive polymer has a positive temperature coefficient of resistance and is thereby self-regulating. Current in-rush when the heater is cold is reduced by initially having only a portion of the heater connected to the power source.

A sleeve suitable for making a cable splice case comprises a matrix material and a recoverable fabric by virtue of which the sleeve is recoverable. The sleeve comprises recoverable weft fibres in bundles of 2-6 running circumferentially, and longitudinal heat-stable warp fibres.

A heat-recoverable article suitable for enclosing a telecommunications cable splice comprises a recoverable fabric cover and a strengthening layer laminated to a surface of the fabric cover.

A self-regulating PTC heater in which the direction of flow of current is reversible in a region of the PTC material in response to a change in the resistivity of the material whereby current in-rush is reduced.

A method of environmentally sealing an indented surface comprises applying a sealing material, e.g. a gel to the surface, together with an elastically deformable means, e.g. a foam. The elastically deformable means is capable of maintaining the sealing material under compression, even after further displacement of the sealing material into the indentations.

Method and article for sealing protection of terminal blocks

A branch-off between telecommunications cables (5) may be sealed by means of an electrically heat-recoverable sleeve (1) and a branch-off clip (2) which holds together circumferentially spaced portions of the sleeve (1) between the branching cables (5). The clip (2) has an inner leg of heat-activatable sealing material which in use is positioned in the sleeve (1) between the cables (5). The sealing material is activated by the heat generated in the sleeve (1) during recovery.

Electrically heat-recoverable sleeve

A seal between an object such as a cable, cable splice or branch-off, and a surface such as a recoverable sleeve by means of a flexible envelope containing a void-filling composition. The void-filling composition undergoes a change from a low viscosity on installation, which allows the flexible envelope to conform to the object, to a high viscosity after installation, which gives mechanical strength to the seal. Deformation of the flexible envelope on installation may be brought about by installation of the recoverable sleeve or other surrounding surface.
