A turbine housing can include a bearing housing end and a treatment unit end; a volute wall that defines a volute; a wall that defines at least a portion of a turbine wheel space that defines a turbine wheel space axis and a turbine wheel space diameter, where the wall extends to an axial peak to define an extended space with an extended space outlet having an extended space outlet dimension; and an outlet wall that defines an outlet space with a treatment unit end outlet having an outlet dimension, where the extended space is disposed at least in part axially between the turbine wheel space and the outlet space to increase axial velocity uniformity at the treatment unit end outlet.

Turbocharger turbine housing

A turbocharger includes a three-way rotary turbine bypass valve (TBV) operable to selectively supply exhaust gases to a turbine feed passage leading to a turbine wheel, and/or to a bypass passage that bypasses the turbine wheel. The TBV is structured and arranged to close the bypass outlet of the valve when the turbine outlet is fully open, to partially open the bypass passage while the turbine outlet remains fully open, to fully open the bypass passage when the turbine outlet is partially closed, and to fully open the bypass passage when the turbine passage is fully closed. The TBV turns the exhaust gas flows through acute angles between inlet and outlets, mitigating pressure losses through the valve. Leakage to bypass is minimized by a labyrinth seal formed when the valve member closes the bypass outlet.

A turbocharger system includes a valve assembly with an inlet, a first outlet, and a second outlet. The inlet is configured for receiving flow of an exhaust gas from an engine. The valve assembly includes a valve structure disposed within a housing. The valve structure is configured to rotate about an axis of rotation between a first position and a second position. The valve structure defines a nonlinear flow passage with an axial upstream end and radial downstream end. The valve structure, in a first position, directs exhaust gas from the inlet to the first outlet and closes off the second outlet. The valve structure, in the second position, directs exhaust gas from the inlet to the second outlet and closes off the first outlet.

Rotary axial valve

A turbocharger having a variable-nozzle turbine formed by pivotable vanes supported by a nozzle ring includes an elastically deformable locator disposed between a radially outwardly facing surface of the center housing and an opposing surface of the nozzle ring. In one embodiment the locator is a metallic ring having a radially undulating waveform shape that repeats a plurality of times about a circumference of the locator. In another embodiment the locator is a metallic ring having a C-shaped cross-section in a radial-axial plane. In still another embodiment the locator is a metallic ring having an S-shaped cross-section in a radial-axial plane. In a further embodiment the locator is a plurality of circumferentially spaced, radial locator pins affixed in the center housing and received in radial slots formed in the nozzle ring, the pins restraining the nozzle ring circumferentially and axially but allowing thermal expansion of the nozzle ring.
