A method of making a component of an electrical machine is provided. An additive manufacturing process is used to manufacture a part, including applying beams of energy to a successive plurality of ferromagnetic material particles and fusing them together to form a ring or segment of a ring with an axis, a solid portion, and laminas that extend from the solid portion in a radial or axial direction.

Additive manufacturing for segmented electric machines

A method of making a component of a radial or axial flux electrical machine is provided. An additive manufacturing process is used to manufacture a plurality of laminas, including applying beams of energy to a successive plurality of ferromagnetic material particles and fusing them together to form a ferromagnetic helix or spiral, disposing an insulating material on said ferromagnetic helix or spiral, compressing the ferromagnetic helix or spiral to form a compressed ferromagnetic helix or spiral, and fixing the compressed ferromagnetic helix or spiral. A method of making a component of a transverse flux electrical machine is provided, including using an additive manufacturing process.

An electromagnetic braking system of a power generation system includes an electrically conductive disc coupled to a rotatable shaft operatively coupled between a prime mover and a generator; a controller for receiving a status signal from the power generation system and for generating a control signal based on the status signal; and an inducting unit for applying an electromagnetic braking force on the electrically conductive disc when commanded by the control signal to regulate a rotational speed of the rotatable shaft.

A variable speed electric machine and a method for generating electric energy is provided. The electric machine includes an outer stator with a first set of field windings. Further, the electric machine includes a modulator outer rotor that is concentric and is located proximate to the outer stator. The modulator outer rotor is operatively coupled to an input shaft. Furthermore the electric machine includes a permanent magnet inner rotor concentric to the modulator outer rotor. The electric machine also includes an inner stator with a second set of field windings. The inner stator is concentric to the inner rotor and is operatively coupled to an electric grid. The outer stator, the modulator outer rotor, inner stator and the inner rotor are magnetically coupled with each other so as to maintain a constant electric frequency at the inner stator.

A system and method for a propulsion system includes an electric motor and an energy storage unit configured to supply a primary power to the electric motor. The propulsion system also includes a plurality of auxiliary power units (APUs) configured to supply a secondary power to at least one of the electric motor and the energy storage unit. Each of the plurality of APUs includes a free-piston engine configured to generate a mechanical output, a linear generator configured to transform the mechanical output to an electrical power, and a controller. The controller receives a power command from the electric motor and/or the energy storage unit, determines an amount of secondary power needed to meet the power command, and selectively activates a number of the plurality of APUs to generate the needed amount of secondary power.

One embodiment is a system with an audible noise signal from a drive train wherein a damping circuit produces a damping torque that is a phase shifted and amplified version of the noise signal that is applied to the air-gap torque of a generator or motor coupled to the drive train and effectively reduces the audible noise.

System and method for vehicle temperature control

The invention relates to a wind energy system with hydraulic energy transmission with non-symmetric actuation. The non-symmetric actuation is caused by valve control and mechanical means for controlling the actuation of the pistons. A cylinder unit is provided comprising a drive unit and an output unit associated with two hydraulic connections. The drive and the output unit comprise a minimum of two cylinders, in which pistons are reciprocating. Some of the cylinders can be switched off during low wind speeds. The cylinders communicate with a low pressure manifold and a high pressure manifold. These manifolds are part of the hydraulic connections. Use of the fluid-working machine as transmission in wind energy systems increases the overall economical efficiency.
