A method for examining a value document includes emitting ultrasonic pulses onto several locations on the value document. An echo pulse arises by reflection of at least a portion of a respective ultrasonic pulse at the value document. The echo pulses are received while forming echo values, and from the echo values at least a characteristic value is established as to the wrinkledness of the value document. As apparatus is provided for carrying out the method.

An apparatus and a corresponding method for checking value documents, involves at least one first sensor configured to detect electromagnetic radiation reflected and/or transmitted by a value document and to convert the radiation into corresponding first sensor signals. From the pixel data there are established first reduced-resolution pixel data for reduced-resolution pixels of the first reduced-resolution image which describe a reduced-resolution optical image at least of the security-feature region of the value document, whose optical spatial resolution corresponds to the ultrasonic spatial resolution.
