A window assembly incorporating a window frame and seal and a method of forming the same are provided. The window assembly includes a window transparency first ply coupled to a first window structure. A window transparency second ply is coupled to the first ply and is spaced apart from the first structure defining a gap there between. A portion of the first structure, or a second window structure coupled to the first structure, extends over the second ply. A seal is placed, fitted or formed within the gap and between the second ply and the portion of the first structure or the second structure extending over the second ply.

Window frame/seal assembly and method of forming the same

A laminated face ply for aircraft windshields provides improvement in window performance. The laminated face ply incorporates an outer glass face ply and an inner glass ply of thin, chemically strengthened glass having substantially identical thicknesses of about 0.026'. A first urethane interlayer bonds the outer face ply to the inner ply. The thickness of the first urethane interlayer is sufficient to accommodate thermal stresses arising between the outer ply and inner ply, but sufficiently thin to limit deflection of the outer ply for impact resistance. A second urethane interlayer is employed to bond the inner glass ply to a structural ply of the windshield. The second interlayer has a thickness substantially identical to the first urethane interlayer to accommodate thermal stresses arising between the inner glass ply and the structural ply of the windshield while similarly limiting deflection of the inner ply with respect to the structural ply of the windshield for improved impact resistance.

Thin laminated heated glass face ply for aircraft windshields

A laminated environmental protective layer for acrylic aircraft windows provides significant improvement in the performance of original production windows and in repair of damaged aircraft windows. A thin chemical and erosion resistant outer protective layer of environment resistant transparent material is laminated to the exterior acrylic surface of the aircraft window using a thin urethane interlayer. Use of chemically strengthened glass for the outer protective layer and hot processing of the laminate increases impact resistance. Addition of an inner balancing layer minimizes bowing of the processed window and enhances stiffness of the window and compression of the outer layer for additional impact resistance.

Laminated environmental protection layer for acrylic aircraft windows

Refurbishment of an all glass laminate aircraft window is accomplished by removal of the glass face ply and machining the polymeric laminating layer to remove an outer portion while leaving an inner portion adhered to the structural glass ply. The machined polymeric surface is treated to remove machine marks while maintaining a textured surface. A new glass face ply and polymeric laminating film sufficient to fill the machined portion of the polymeric layer are relaminated to the treated surface to provide a new bonded face ply.

Process and tool for aircraft windshield refurbishment

This aircraft windshield resistant to penetration by impact with birds has a plurality of transparent plastic sheets bonded together with flexible interlayers. The innermost sheet of the laminate is formed of a polycarbonate. A metal bearing strip is adhesively bonded to the inside face of the innermost sheet along at least one edge with the inboard edge of the bearing strip curling gradually away from the inner face of the innermost plastic sheet and with a wedge-shaped body of flexible adhesive therebetween. A row of countersunk attachment holes along the edge of the windshield extends through the transparent sheets and the bearing strip and each contains a bushing for receiving a flat head bolt for connecting the windshield to an airframe structure. The inner end of each bushing has an enlarged shoulder having a length not less than the thickness of the bearing strip for bearing on the airframe structure. In case of bird impact the windshield can flex and the bearing strip inhibits edge breakage and tearing of the windshield adjacent the attachment holes. It also assures an adequate bend radius in the plastic to prevent breakage. Broaching of the bolt heads through plastic absorbs impact energy and protects the bolts from tensile and bending failure. A shallow V-shaped edge sealant configuration is also provided.
