An inner conductor for a gas filled high voltage cable is constructed from plural elements arranged on a carrier tube in one or several layers. The conductive elements are either stranded around the carrier while remaining spaced from each other so that they can deform azimuthally in a wave-like pattern whenever their temperature increases, or alternatively, the conductor elements remain unstranded and are already contoured in a wave-like pattern whose amplitude excursion increases with temperature. In either case, length extensions of the elements are taken up by the wave pattern and do not cause overall length extensions of the conductor assembly as a whole.

The purity of gas insulation in a high voltage device is improved by providing those conductor surface therein having relatively low local electric field strength with an exposed layer of adhesive glue to which floating particles will adhere.

High voltage electrical cable comprising an inner elongated conductive member, a corrugated metallic tubular member positioned about such inner member, and a plurality of nonconductive spacers each positioned along the longitudinal axis of the electrical cable and extending between said members through a nonconductive environment comprising, for example, a gaseous, foam or liquid insulator. To avoid premature insulation breakdown or sparkover in the vicinity of the spacers, such spacers are so configurated and positioned that their end portions coming into engagement with the corrugations of the surrounding tubular member follow the profile of the engaged corrugations so as to extend into the corrugation troughs thereof.

The cable is constructed so that the inner conductor has an asymmetric contour, configuration or position in the outer conductor to reduce the field strength in some zones of the cable while the inner conductor is held in the tubular interior of the cable in such a manner so that zones of increased field strength are bridged by spacer material.

Gas insulated high voltage cable

In a gas insulated high voltage cable having an outer tubular, corrugated conductor and an inner centrally disposed conductor, a spacer construction for holding and spacing the inner conductor in the tubular outer conductor, wherein each spacer has at least two spacer elements of semi annular construction each and complementing each other for establishing a closed annulus, each element constructed for laterial slipping onto the inner conductor, and the two spacer elements are secured to each other to establish the closed annulus in positive disposition on the inner conductor. Additional features impede local voltage breakdown, positive interlock of parts and resilient load relief.
