A method of determining residual intensity noise (RIN) of a sensor may comprise determining a first amplitude of a first harmonic of the sensor while a signal propagating through the sensor is modulated at a modulating frequency corresponding to twice an eigenfrequency of the sensor. The method may further comprise determining a second amplitude of a second harmonic of the sensor while the signal propagating through the sensor is modulated the modulating frequency, and determining the RIN of the sensor as a ratio of the first amplitude and the second amplitude.

A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) comprises at least two optical circuits disposed on the PIC, two or more optical interfaces each configured to provide a connection to at least one external optical component, and a layout arrangement of the at least two optical circuits on the PIC, the layout arrangement configured such that the two or more optical interfaces are situated in at least one local group of optical interfaces, and the at least one local group of optical interfaces is located on at least one facet of the PIC. The at least two optical circuits may comprise a set of N single-axis 2×2 optical fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) circuits for use as a multi-axis FOG assembly in an inertial management unit (IMU) or an inertial navigation system (INS).

A method for operating a fiber optic gyroscope to measure angular velocity uses a closed-loop modulation scheme. Two-state modulation voltages are applied to an optical modulator and continuously adjusted to maintain a null difference between corresponding demodulated voltages from a photodetector. If one of the modulation voltages reaches a threshold voltage, the continuous nulling adjustment is interrupted briefly while the two-state modulation voltages are reset to values that correspond to relative phases of &#x3c0;/2 and &#x2212;&#x3c0;/2 when the gyroscope is stationary, then the continuous adjustment is resumed. This reoccurring resetting, while the gyroscope accelerates or decelerates, substantially increases the dynamic range over which the gyroscope can precisely measure angular velocity.
