The relational motion detection system measures relative motion of a head of a subject relative to a torso of a subject. The system includes a first motion detection sensor on a first apparatus configured to be secured to a head of a subject to detect a first motion. It also includes a second motion detection sensor on a second apparatus configured to be secured to the torso of a subject to detect a second motion. The system further includes a control unit configured to obtain information regarding the first motion from the first motion detection sensor and second motion from the second motion detection sensor, wherein the control unit contains instructions for calculating motion of the head relative to the torso of the subject based on the obtained first motion and second motion.

In an embodiment, a device for reducing brain and cervical spine injury includes a headpiece sufficiently designed to secure to a user's head, the headpiece having a first attachment member; a support harness sufficiently designed to secure to the user's torso, the support harness having a second attachment member; and a telescoping member having a main tube and a series of progressively smaller diameter tubes nested within each other, wherein the smaller diameter tubes are adapted to extend and compress in a linear plane by the intake and outflow of fluid, wherein the telescoping member has a first engaging member for engaging the first attachment member, and wherein the telescoping member has a second engaging member for engaging the second attachment member.

Apparatus and methods for reducing brain and cervical spine injury

A method of training a subject to improve anticipatory timing includes presenting the subject with multiple sequences of stimuli, receiving sensor signals associated with responses by the subject to the stimuli, and recording response times in accordance with the sensor signals, wherein the recorded response times are associated with the responses by the subject to the multiple sequences of stimuli, and wherein the response times have an associated distribution. The method further includes analyzing the distribution of response times for the subject to determine variability in anticipatory timing of the subject with respect to the stimuli, and generating a subject feedback signal corresponding to a result of the analyzing so as to train the subject to improve anticipatory timing of the subject.

Method for improving cognition and motor timing

The present invention may comprise a helmet worn by a person, with additional elements to dampen, restrain or totally block rotational movement upon the sensing of severe rotational movement of the head. This device prevents serious brain and cervical spine injury by restraining or totally blocking rotational movement of the head in response to severe acceleration/deceleration.

Apparatus for reducing brain and cervical spine injury due to rotational movement

A system for testing a subject for cognitive impairment includes a display, one or more video cameras and a computer. The display presents to the subject multiple stimuli, including a predictable, smoothly moving object, repeatedly moving over a same path. The video cameras sense eye movements of the subject, while the subject visually follows the object on the display. The computer analyzes the subject's eye movements to determine, for example, accuracy and variability of the subject's visual pursuit of the display of the smoothly moving object, and determines, based on the analysis, if the subject has a cognitive impairment. The analysis may provide one or more metrics, such as a metric of attention, a metric of fatigability and a metric of distractibility. The system may also be configured to provide feedback signals to the user, in which case the system also functions as cognition timing and motor training system.

Cognition and motor timing diagnosis using smooth eye pursuit analysis

A method of training a subject to improve anticipatory timing includes presenting the subject with multiple sequences of stimuli, receiving sensor signals associated with responses by the subject to the stimuli, and recording response times in accordance with the sensor signals, wherein the recorded response times are associated with the responses by the subject to the multiple sequences of stimuli, and wherein the response times have an associated distribution. Training system and method for improving cognition and motor timing

A system for testing a subject's cognition and motor timing includes an actuator, a sensor and a computer. The actuator is configured to present to the subject multiple stimuli, including predictable stimuli and non-predictable (e.g., random or pseudo-random) stimuli. The sensor generates sensor signals associated with the subject responding to the stimuli. The computer stores timing values associated with the sensor signals for a plurality of the sequences of stimuli, and analyzes the timing values to determine if the subject has an anticipatory timing impairment. The system may also be configured to provide feedback signals to the user, in which case the system also functions as cognition timing and motor training system.

Cognition and motor timing diagnosis and training system and method

A catheter guide for controlling an angle of entry of a catheter into a human cranium at an angle of 90 degrees to the surface and allowing for easy removable of the catheter guide from the catheter after use. A tubular member defines a catheter guide lumen to permit the passage therethrough of a catheter. A base supports the tubular member. In a two piece assembly, the tubular member may have a fracture line allowing the catheter guide to be separated from the catheter. In an integrated, break-away assembly, the catheter guide may be broken apart to allow for the removal of the catheter guide from the catheter. Alternatively, in an integrated assembly or in a two piece assembly, the catheter guide may be removed from a catheter through a slot in the catheter guide.

Slotted catheter guide for perpendicular insertion into a cranium orifice

An improved apparatus for drilling an orifice in a human cranium at an angle of substantially 90 degrees to a plane defined by a tangent to the surface of the cranium at the orifice and for guiding ventricular catheter placement. The apparatus has a first tubular guide for directing a drill at the proper angle, the first tubular guide being supported upon the cranium by a plurality of leg members and having a slot or opening which allows for visualization of the drilling point. The invention further includes a second tubular guide for directing a catheter into the ventricular portion of the patient's brain. The second tubular guide, has a slot or opening which allows for pre-loading of the catheter. The second tubular guide inserts within the first tubular guide and receives the catheter and directs it into the ventrical. The slotted design of the first and second tubular guides allow the guides to be removed from the side of the catheter rather than over the end of the catheter.

Catheter guide and drill guide apparatus and method for perpendicular insertion into a cranium orifice

An apparatus and method for drilling an orifice in a human cranium at an angle of substantially 90.degree. to a plane defined by a tangent to the surface of the cranium at the orifice. The apparatus comprises a ring structure adapted to guide and support a drill, the ring structure comprising a retaining member configured for engagement with a flexible member such as a spring and a sleeve member configured for insertion within the retaining member and operatively associated therewith to form a support assembly. The support assembly is capable of a restricted degree of vertical, slideable movement within a tubular member. The apparatus further comprises a tubular member, adjacent and external to the ring structure, adapted to guide and support the support assembly; a flexible member adjacent the support assembly for restricting vertical movement thereby within the tube; and support structure, the support structure being adapted to rest unsecured upon the cranium. The method of the invention comprises positioning the drill guide upon the patient's cranium such that the support structure, the tubular member and the support assembly are related to each other and to the cranium so as to guide the drill through the cranium in a direction perpendicular to a plane defined by a tangent to the surface of the cranium at the orifice and drilling through said cranium until the tip of the drill bit passes therethrough and stops rotation rapidly once it has penetrated the surface.

Drill guide apparatus for perpendicular perforation of the cranium

A catheter for placement into the ventricular system of the brain or any other member or cavity of the body of a subject comprising a flexible elongated body having a non-circular bore, a wall thickness sufficient to contain and transport fluid therein, a forward end and tip for insertion into the ventricular system of the brain of a subject, and a plurality of spaced apertures located in the forward end of the body spaced from the tip. The apertures are configured and positioned to minimize abrasion of brain tissue upon insertion of the catheter and to prevent tissue from growing into the catheter apertures, thereby providing improved flow of fluid into or from said ventricular system. The non-circular bore, preferably triangular, provides increased structural integrity and increased effective flow through the catheter compared to those having a circular bore. Also methods of using such catheters are disclosed herein.

Angled hole ventricular catheter with non-circular bore

A device for facilitating the insertion of an instrument such as a surgical or observational tool into a patient's cranial cavity through a previously formed aperture in the cranium. The device comprises a guide with an open elongated tubular member having a first and a second end, wherein at least a portion of the tubular member at the first and thereof is configured and adapted for passage through the aperture. An outer surface portion of the open tubular member is configured for engagement with a separate locking apparatus for securing the device to the cranial surface. The device further comprises a flanged tip on the first end of the tubular member for stabilizing it within the aperture. An alignment stand configured for the passage therethrough of at least a portion of the device is seated upon the cranium directly above the aperture. The guide is inserted therethrough and into the cranial cavity. Subsequently, an elongated tubular member is inserted into the guide, which spreads the flanged tips therof, thus creating an interference fit between the flanges and the inner surface of the cranium. A locking ring, positioned upon the guide above the alignment stand, is utilized to secure the device against the cranium by screwing the ring in the direction of the stand. A method for assembling the device within a burr hole previously prepared in the patient's cranium is additionally disclosed.

An apparatus for making a hollow elongated member having a plurality of apertures therein comprising: a first component for supporting a hollow elongated member in a predetermined position and orientation for formation of a plurality of apertures therein; and a second component for forming a plurality of apertures at a predetermined position and orientation and of a predetermmined dimension thereof in the hollow elongated member; the second component being guidably received within the first component for alignment therewith. Alternatively, the apparatus includes an insert comprising rod means for forming a plurality of apertures of a predetermined size; and means for forming and supporting the hollow bore of the elongated member. The rod means is positioned at a predetermined orientation with respect to the bore forming means so that the hollow elongated member receives a plurality of apertures therein at a predetermined position, orientation and dimension. This embodiment includes a molding assembly comprising means for forming and supporting a hollow elongated member by substantially completely surrounding the member; a plurality of apertures located in the forming means for guidably receiving the rod means therein to properly orient the insert within a forming means; and means for introducing a polymerizable liquid into the molding assembly so as to form the catheter by polymerization of the liquid therein.

Apparatus for making angled hole ventricular catheter

An apparatus and method for drilling an orifice in a human cranium at an angle of substantially 90.degree. to a plane defined by a tangent to the surface of the cranium at the orifice. The apparatus comprises a first tubular guide for directing a drill at the proper angle, the first guide being suppored upon the cranium by a plurality of leg members. The invention further comprises a hand-operated twist drill device, configured for insertion into the tubular guide. A second guide, of reduced diameter relative to the first tubular guide is insertable into the first guide upon completion of the burr hole to facilitate entry of a catheter into the ventricular portion of the patient's brain. The method of the invention comprises positioning the first drill guide upon the patient's cranium, inserting the twist drill therein so as to prepare a burr hole extending at an angle of substantially 90.degree. to a plane tangential to the surface, replacing the drill with a catheter guide insertable within the drill guide and inserting a catheter through the second guide, through the burr hole and into a ventricular portion of the patient's brain.

Catheter guide apparatus for perpendicular insertion into a cranium

A device is disclosed comprising a stretchable cylindrical net-like structure and at least one guide ring for partial placement over a fetus. The cylindrical net-like structure is formed such that as force is applied along its longitudinal axis, the length of the cylindrical structure is increased while the diameter of such cylindrical structure is decreased. The guide ring is expandable for passage therethrough of the fetal head and has an at rest diameter between that of the fetal neck and the fetal head.
