A method is provided of calibrating a system that detects presence of a pollution component within exhaust gases proceeding along an exhaust passageway. A measurement cell of a probe is isolated by movement of either the entire probe or a shield within the probe from the exhaust gas to allow reference gas to be detected by a laser beam in the mid-infrared range in the measurement cell to calibrate the system. In another example, a laser source is placed on one side of an exhaust passageway and a detector is placed on the other side. A reference cell is provided that is used to receive reference gas and calibrate the system. In yet another example, the exhaust gas is extracted from the passageway and is measured in a reference cell. The reference cell is also filled with reference gas when it is desired to calibrate the system.

Calibration system and method of using mid-IR laser measure and monitor exhaust pollutant

Methods and apparatus for welding a component to fill a groove therein. The method entails simultaneously projecting an electric arc and at least first and second laser beams into the groove. The electric arc melts and deposits a filler material in the groove while the first and second laser beams are projected onto opposite first and second walls, respectively, of the groove. The axis of each of the first and second laser beams is oriented at an acute angle relative to the respective wall thereof.

Certain embodiments of the invention may include filters and methods for imparting structural support to a pleated filter material. According to an example embodiment, the method includes forming a filter structure from one or more sections of pleated filter media, wherein the filter structure comprises one or more filter pleats. The method also includes extruding a banding material to form one or more radial support regions in at least circumferential contact with at least one of an inner or an outer surface of the filter structure, and maintaining spacing between the one or more filter pleats of the filter structure with the one or more radial support regions.

Filters and methods for imparting structural support to pleated filter media

A method facilitates extending the useful life of a turbine engine including a combustor and a turbine downstream from and in flow communication with the combustor. The method comprises identifying at least a portion of the combustor that is at least one of distressed, worn, deteriorated, satisfied pre-determined threshold data, and beyond serviceable limits, identifying at least one enhancement kit for installation within the combustor, and removing at least two portions of the combustor including at least two of a combustor dome assembly, a swirler/cowl assembly, and the combustor inner and outer liners. The method also comprises installing the enhancement kit within the turbine engine such that a useful life of the turbine engine is facilitated to be increased.

Methods to facilitate extending gas turbine engine useful life

Systems and methods for controlling combustion emission parameters associated with a gas turbine combustor. The method can include providing an optical path through a gas turbine exhaust duct, propagating light along the optical path, measuring exhaust species absorption of the light within the gas turbine exhaust duct, and controlling at least one of the combustion parameters based at least in part on the measured exhaust species absorption.

Systems and methods for closed loop emissions control

An inlet air filtration system for a gas turbine includes, in an exemplary embodiment, an air plenum, and a plurality of filter elements mounted inside the air plenum, with each filter element including a support structure. The inlet air filtration system also includes a plurality of electrodes positioned proximate the plurality of filter elements, where the electrodes are coupled to a power source which supplies a voltage to the electrodes. The voltage is sufficient to establish an electrostatic field between the electrodes and the filter elements, and is sufficient to produce a corona discharge from the electrodes, wherein an amount of current applied to the filter elements is about 0.1 &#x3bc;A/ftto about 15 &#x3bc;A/ft.

Apparatus for filtering gas turbine inlet air

An inlet air filtration system for a gas turbine includes, in an exemplary embodiment, an air plenum, and a plurality of filter elements mounted inside the air plenum, with each filter element including a support structure. The inlet air filtration system also includes a plurality of electrodes positioned proximate the plurality of filter elements, where the electrodes are coupled to a power source which supplies a voltage to the electrodes. The voltage is sufficient to establish an electrostatic field between the electrodes and the filter elements, and at the same time, the voltage is sufficient to produce a corona discharge from the electrodes.

An inlet air treatment system for a gas turbine includes, in an exemplary embodiment, an air plenum, and a moisture removal system, and an air filtration system located downstream from the moisture removal system. The moisture removal system includes a plurality of S-shaped vanes, and a mesh structure downstream from the plurality of S-shaped vanes. The air filtration system includes a plurality of filter elements, with each filter element including a support structure. The inlet air filtration system also includes a plurality of electrodes positioned proximate the plurality of filter elements, where the electrodes are coupled to a power source which supplies a voltage to the electrodes. The voltage is sufficient to establish an electrostatic field between the electrodes and the filter elements, and at the same time, the voltage is sufficient to produce a corona discharge from the electrodes.
