A tool (), for example, a tool for use downhole in a tubular oil or gas well, and a method of deploying and operating the tool (), are disclosed herein. The tool () includes a generally cylindrical body (), which includes a chamber (). A fuel source () is also included. The fuel source () is a pressurised fuel and oxidant mixture () which is released into the chamber by an injector device through injector nozzles (). The fuel and oxidant mixture () is ignited to form a combustion jet (). The combustion jet () exits the nozzle outlet () as directed combustion jets, which perforate the walls of the tubular oil or gas well, wherein the walls of the tubular oil or gas well represent a material to be manipulated.

Tool for manipulating material using a pressurized fuel and oxidant mixture

A tool for manipulating a tubular, such as casing or production tubing, in a downhole environment, includes a housing defining a chamber, the chamber having at least one outlet, a propellant source located within the chamber and an ignition mechanism for igniting the propellant source. Upon ignition of the propellant source, the propellant deflagrates, creating at least one stream of combustion products, the chamber directing the stream of combustion products through the/each outlet, towards the tubular to be manipulated, the/each stream of combustion products combining with at least one modifying agent to manipulate the tubular.

Downhole tool with a propellant charge

A tool for penetrating a tubular as described. The tool comprises at least one length of linear shaped charge, a carrier adapted to support the/each length of linear shaped charge, and at least one detonation mechanism for detonating the/each length of linear shaped charge. Upon detonation of the/each length of linear shaped charge, a length of material is projected outwardly from the/each length of linear shaped charge towards an internal surface of die tubular, which is thereby penetrated. The at least one length of linear shaped charge is arranged such that, upon detonation, the trajectory of at least one portion of the projected material intersects the trajectory of at least one other portion of projected material at or adjacent the internal surface of the tubular.

Cutting tool

A tool for manipulating a tubular. The tool comprising a plurality of tool sections arranged in a stack, each tool section comprising a propellant source having an upper surface and lower surface, the upper and lower surfaces being separated by an outer surface extending around the perimeter of the propellant source, a first flame retardant material being associated with the propellant source upper surface and a second flame retardant material being associated with the propellant source lower surface. The tool further comprises at least one modifying agent provided in or adjacent the tool sections or generated by the tool sections; and an ignition mechanism for igniting the propellant source outer surface of each tool section, such that upon ignition, each propellant source is adapted to deflagrate, creating a stream of combustion products, the stream of combustion products extending around, and flowing away from, the outer surface of said propellant source.

Tool with propellant sections

A tool for severing or assisting in the severing of a conduit includes a housing defining a void arranged, in use, to at least partially encircle a conduit and an at least one void access, the void access having a void access inlet in fluid communication with the housing and a void access outlet being in fluid communication with the housing void. At least one propellant source is located within the housing. An ignition mechanism is provided for igniting the propellant source and at least one modifying material. Upon ignition, the propellant source deflagrates, creating at least one stream of combustion products, the stream of combustion products flowing out of the tool through the void access into the void, the void access channelling the stream of combustion products towards the conduit, the stream of combustion products combining with the modifying material to sever or assist in severing the conduit.

Tool for severing or assisting in the severing of a conduit

A colliding tool for severing a target in a wellbore as described. The tool comprises a housing having a first chamber, the first chamber containing an explosive charge; and an at least one detonator connected to the explosive charge, the at least one detonator being insulated from temperature in the wellbore. In use, the at least one detonator is configured to simultaneously initiate a first explosion at a first end of the explosive charge and a second explosion at a second end of said explosive charge.

An improved plug for sealing a tubular as described. The improved plug comprises a plug body, the plug body comprising a propellant and an initiator adapted to initiate the propellant upon a signal. Upon initiation the propellant deflagrates causing the plug body to at least partially disintegrate.

A tool for penetrating a tubular as described. The tool comprises at least one length of linear shaped charge, a carrier adapted to support the/each length of linear shaped charge, and at least one detonation mechanism for detonating the/each length of linear shaped charge. Upon detonation of the/each length of linear shaped charge, a length of material is projected outwardly from the/each length of linear shaped charge towards an internal surface of the tubular, which is thereby penetrated. The at least one length of linear shaped charge is arranged such that, upon detonation, the trajectory of at least one portion of the projected material intersects the trajectory of at least one other portion of projected material at or adjacent the internal surface of the tubular.

A tool for severing a conduit includes a housing defining a void that encircles a conduit to be severed. There is at least one propellant source located within the housing. Upon ignition by an ignition mechanism, the propellant source deflagrates, creating at least one stream of combustion products. The combustion products flow out of the tool through at least one void access and into the void. The void access channels the combustion products towards the conduit. The stream of combustion products combines with a modifying material to sever or assist in severing the conduit. A method of severing a conduit using the tool is provided.

A tool for manipulating a tubular, such as casing or production tubing, in a downhole environment, is described. A nozzle for use with a pressurized water source as typically used in the offshore environment. The nozzle attaches to a hose or fixed work pipe installation and provides a channel through a body, on which is arranged a frusto-conical fluid deflector. Fluid flowing along the channel may impinge upon the fluid deflector and may travel along a surface of the deflector and out of the nozzle in a jet. Various embodiments are described for varying the width of the channel at the deflector to adjusting, a characteristic of the jet and for providing self-cleaning of the nozzle. Further a central channel is described which allows an additional nozzle to be included as are sensors which determine pressure, temperature and the like in the nozzle.

A method and apparatus for determining whether a tubing conveyed perforating (TCP) gun has fired by detecting a change in characteristics of the flow of an oil well. A method and apparatus detects the presence of fluorescent tracer dye to determine whether or not a TCP gun has fired. The method and apparatus detects a change is capacitance, or fiber optic electrical properties to determine whether or not a TCP gun has fired. The method and apparatus detects the number of charges fired to determine whether or not all TCP guns have fired and also provides a method and apparatus for determining the contributions of injection wells to producing wells by introducing fluorescent tracers into injection wells and detecting the presence of the fluorescent tracers at production wells. A method and apparatus is provided for placing fluorescent dye particles in a gravel pack to sense when a gravel pack is deteriorating by detecting the tracer dye particles in the well flow.

Method and apparatus for a tubing conveyed perforating guns fire identification system using fiber optics

A method and apparatus detects the presence of a fluorescent tracer dye, a change in capacitance, or a change in fiber optic electrical properties to determine whether or not a TCP gun has fired. The method and apparatus detects the number of charges fired to determine whether or not all TCP guns have fired and also determines the contributions of injection wells to producing wells by introducing fluorescent tracers into injection wells and detecting the presence of the fluorescent tracers at production wells. The invention places fluorescent dye particles in a gravel pack to sense when a gravel pack is deteriorating by detecting the tracer dye particles in the well flow.

Method and apparatus for a tubing conveyed perforating guns fire identification system using enhanced marker material

The present invention provides a self-contained sensor module for use in a subterranean well that has a well transmitter or a well receiver associated therewith. In one embodiment, the sensor module comprises a housing, a signal receiver, a parameter sensor, an electronic control assembly, and a parameter transmitter; the receiver, sensor, control assembly and transmitter are all contained within the housing. The housing has a size that allows the module to be positioned within a formation about the well or in an annulus between a casing positioned within the well and an outer diameter of the well. The signal receiver is configured to receive a signal from the well transmitter, while the parameter sensor is configured to sense a physical parameter of an environment surrounding the sensor module within the well. The electronic control assembly is coupled to both the signal receiver and the parameter sensor, and is configured to convert the physical parameter to a data signal. The parameter transmitter is coupled to the electronic control assembly and is configured to transmit the data signal to the well receiver.
