A system on a chip for network devices. In one implementation, the system on a chip may include (integrated onto a single integrated circuit), a processor and one or more I/O devices for networking applications. For example, the I/O devices may include one or more network interface circuits for coupling to a network interface. In one embodiment, coherency may be enforced within the boundaries of the system on a chip but not enforced outside of the boundaries.

An agent may be coupled to receive a clock signal associated with the bus, and may be configured to drive a signal responsive to a first edge (rising or falling) of the clock signal and to sample signals responsive to the second edge. The sampled signals may be evaluated to allow for the driving of a signal on the next occurring first edge of the clock signal. By using the first edge to drive signals and the second edge to sample signals, the amount of time dedicated for signal propagation may be one half clock cycle. Bandwidth and/or latency may be positively influenced. In some embodiments, protocols which may require multiple clock cycles on other buses may be completed in fewer clock cycles. For example, certain protocols which may require two clock cycles may be completed in one clock cycle. In one specific implementation, for example, arbitration may be completed in one clock cycle. Request signals may be driven responsive to the first edge of the clock signal and sampled responsive to the second edge. The sampled signals may be evaluated to determine an arbitration winner, which may drive the bus responsive to the next occurrence of the first edge.

A system includes a bus and a circuit for precharging the bus. The circuit may be coupled to receive a clock signal associated with the bus, and may be configured to precharge a bus during an interval of the period of the clock signal, the interval being between a first edge (rising or falling) and the subsequent edge (falling or rising). A second interval within the period and excluding the interval may be used to perform a bus transfer. In this manner, both precharging and transfer may be performed in the same clock cycle. Bandwidth of the bus may be improved since transfers may occur each clock cycle, rather than having a non-transfer clock cycle for precharging.

A memory controller provides programmable flexibility, via one or more configuration registers, for the configuration of the memory. The memory may be optimized for a given application by programming the configuration registers. For example, in one embodiment, the portion of the address of a memory transaction used to select a storage location for access in response to the memory transaction may be programmable. In an implementation designed for DRAM, a first portion may be programmably selected to form the row address and a second portion may be programmable selected to form the column address. Additional embodiments may further include programmable selection of the portion of the address used to select a bank. Still further, interleave modes among memory sections assigned to different chip selects and among two or more channels to memory may be programmable, in some implementations. Furthermore, the portion of the address used to select between interleaved memory sections or interleaved channels may be programmable. One particular implementation may include all of the above programmable features, which may provide a high degree of flexibility in optimizing the memory system.

A system includes two or more agents and a distributed arbitration scheme for the bus to which the agents are connected. Thus, an arbiter corresponding to each agent is provided. The arbiters are reset using a first reset signal, while the agents are reset using a separate reset signal or signals. The arbiters are concurrently released from reset when the first reset signal is deasserted, and may have a consistent reset state to provide for synchronization of the arbiters. The agents may be independently released from reset by the separate reset signals. Accordingly, the arbiters may be synchronized and may remain synchronized even if the corresponding agents are released from reset at different times, or are temporarily held in reset for any reason.

A system including an agent and a memory controller, in which the agent may initiate transactions targeting a memory to which the memory controller is coupled and the transactions may include a page hint indication. The page hint indication is transmitted during the transaction by the agent, and may be an indication of whether or not the page addressed by the transaction should be kept open or closed. The memory controller may receive the page hint indication. When accessing the storage location(s) in the memory in response to the memory transaction, the memory controller may close the page or keep the page open responsive to the page hint indication.

A memory controller may include a request queue for receiving transaction information (e.g. the address of the transaction) and a channel control circuit. A control circuit for the request queue may issue addresses from the request queue to the channel control circuit out of order, and thus the memory operations may be completed out of order. The request queue may shift entries corresponding to transactions younger than a completing transaction to delete the completing transaction's information from the request queue. However, a data buffer for storing the data corresponding to transactions may not be shifted. Each queue entry in the request queue may store a data buffer pointer indicative of the data buffer entry assigned to the corresponding transaction. The data buffer pointer may be used to communicate between the channel control circuit, the request queue, and the control circuit. In one implementation, the request queue may implement associative comparisons of information in each queue entry (e.g. transaction IDs and/or data buffer pointers). In one embodiment, the request queue and control circuit may be in the bus clock domain, while the channel control circuit may be in the memory clock domain.
