The present invention relates to copolymer formulations of poly(itaconic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) for dishwasher detergent compositions with a controlled amount of a second polymeric component.

A method of producing a dosage form detergent product, comprises the steps of: (a) producing an open-mouthed pouch by forming a water-soluble, synthetic plastics film into a mould cavity defining the pouch, (b) introducing a particulate first detergent composition into the pouch, (c) forming a recess in the upper surface of the particulate first detergent composition, (d) introducing into the recess a pre-formed, shape-retaining second detergent component with an at least substantially planar face positioned to be exposed from the particulate first detergent component, and (e) sealing a water-soluble film over the mouth of the pouch and against the exposed face of the pre-formed detergent product.

Detergent tablets for use in fabric washing are made by mixing: (i) particles which contain non-soap organic surfactant and other materials, especially detergency builder, with (ii) material which is other than soap or organic surfactant and which has a solubility in water of at least 10 gm/liter at 20&deg; C., followed by compacting the mixture into a tablet or a region of a tablet using an applied pressure in a range from 3.0 to 35 MPa. Such a pressure, used with the specified mixture, leads to tablets with good strength which also disintegrates with satisfactory speed.

Process for the manufacture of tablet detergent compositions

The speed of disintegration of tablets containing a water-softening agent, especially water-insoluble, water-softening agent intended as detergency builder for fabric washing is enhanced by incorporating sodium acetate trihydrate, potassium acetate or a mixture thereof. To inhibit caking and facilitate handling during manufacture, smaller particles of another substance are preferably provided at the surface of the crystals of the acetate or citrate.

A tablet of compacted particulate detergent composition has an indentation (39) around a periphery of the face (37) of the tablet. The surface circumscribed by the indentation preferably has higher permeability and is rougher than the surface of the indentation (39) itself. Such a tablet can be made by a process in which a detergent composition is compacted in a mould by at least one die with an elastomeric surface layer (36) on an area which contacts the composition, which layer (36) is surrounded by a rigid rim (30) which forms the indentation (39).
