In one aspect, a method of performing Fourier Transform (FT) mass spectrometry is disclosed, which comprises passing a plurality of ions through an FT mass analyzer comprising a plurality of rods arranged in a multipole configuration, where the plurality of rods include an input port for receiving ions and an output port through which ions can exit the mass analyzer. The method can further include applying at least one RF voltage to at least one of the rods so as to generate an RF field for radial confinement of the ions as they pass through the mass analyzer, and applying a resonant burst of an AC signal to at least one of said rods so as to remove ions having selected m/z ratios, e.g., m/z ratios within a desired range, from the ions introduced into the FT mass analyzer.

Signal-to-Noise improvement in fourier transform quadrupole mass spectrometer

In one aspect, a method for performing mass spectrometry is disclosed, which comprises using a Fourier transform mass analyzer, which extends from an inlet port to an outlet port, to acquire a first mass spectrum of a first plurality of ions generated by ionizing a sample, where the first plurality of ions are radially confined within the mass analyzer under a first radial confinement condition. The method further includes using the Fourier transform mass analyzer to acquire a second mass spectrum of a second plurality of ions generated by ionizing the sample, where the second plurality of ions are radially confined within said mass analyzer using a second radial confinement condition, and comparing said first and second mass spectra to identify spurious mass signals.

Identification of harmonics in RF quadrupole Fourier transform mass spectra

In various aspects, methods and systems disclosed herein are capable of operating a Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry (FTMS) quadrupole mass analyzer in two operational modes: transmitting mode and trapping mode. In the trapping mode, ions are first trapped and cooled within the FTMS quadrupole mass analyzer prior to being subjected to an excitation pulse and ejected from the FTMS quadrupole mass analyzer for detection. However, in transmitting mode, the FTMS quadrupole mass analyzer may provide more rapid analysis because the excitation pulse is applied to the ions of an ion beam that is being continuously transmitted through the FTMS quadrupole mass analyzer.

In one aspect, a mass spectrometer is disclosed, which comprises a Fourier Transform (FT) mass analyzer having an input port for receiving ions and an exit port through which the ions exit the FT mass analyzer, a detector disposed downstream of said FT analyzer for detecting ions exiting the FT analyzer, and a multi-segment ion guide having a plurality of segments, said multi-segment ion guide being disposed upstream of said FT mass analyzer and having an input port for receiving ions and an output port through which ions exit the FT mass analyzer. The segments of the ion guide are configured to be independently activated via application of a DC offset voltage thereto so as to adjust a length through which ions passing through the ion guide experience collisional cooling.

In one aspect, a method of calibrating a Fourier Transform (FT) multipole mass spectrometer is disclosed, which comprises measuring a plurality of secular frequencies of a calibrant ion in a multipole FT mass analyzer for a plurality of RF voltages (V) applied to at least one rod of the multipole mass analyzer, calculating Mathieu β and q parameters for each of 5 the measured secular frequencies, and determining RF voltage amplitude (V) for each calculated q parameter. For each calculated q parameter, an offset RF voltage amplitude (ΔV) corresponding to a deviation of the applied Vand the calculated Vis determined so as to generate a ΔVv.s. q calibration curve.

In some embodiments, the present disclosure provides methods of making and using disclosed interface elements and mass spectrometry systems. In some embodiments, implementations of the present disclosure are useful in mass spectrometry systems, including, for example, improving signal-to-noise and reducing contamination.

In one aspect, a mass analyzer is disclosed, which comprises a quadrupole having an input end for receiving ions and an output end through which ions can exit the quadrupole, said quadrupole having a plurality of rods to at least some of which an RF voltage can be applied for generating a quadrupolar field for causing radial confinement of the ions as they propagate through the quadrupole and further generating fringing fields in proximity of said output end. The mass analyzer further includes at least a voltage source for applying a voltage pulse to at least one of said rods so as to excite radial oscillations of at least a portion of the ions passing through the quadrupole at secular frequencies thereof, where the radially-excited ions interact with the fringing fields as they exit the quadrupole such that their radial oscillations are converted into axial oscillations.

Systems and methods described herein utilize a multipole ion guide that can receive ions from an ion source for transmission to downstream mass analyzers, while preventing unwanted/interfering/contaminating ions from being transmitted into the high-vacuum chambers of mass spectrometer systems. In various aspects, RF and/or DC signals can be provided to auxiliary electrodes interposed within a quadrupole rod set so as to control or manipulate the transmission of ions from the multipole ion guide.

RF/DC filter to enhance mass spectrometer robustness

A quadrupole is filled with ions and the ions are cooled by applying a pressure and gas flow within the quadrupole. Ions are trapped in the quadrupole by applying a DC voltage and an RF voltage to quadrupole rods of the quadrupole, one or more DC voltages to a plurality of auxiliary electrodes of the quadrupole, and a DC voltage and an RF voltage to an exit lens at the end of the quadrupole. The ions are coherently oscillated after the filling and cooling by applying a coherent excitation between at least two rods of the quadrupole rods. The coherently oscillating ions are axially ejected through the exit lens and to a destructive detector for detection by changing one or more voltages of the one or more DC voltages of the plurality of auxiliary electrodes and changing the DC voltage of the exit lens.

A mass spectrometer apparatus and method for conducting simultaneous MS/MS analysis including: a device to select a precursor ion having a specified m/z; a gas-filled collision cell; an RF-only multipole mass spectrometer, the mass spectrometer having a generator attached thereto for generating at least two auxiliary AC fields in the RF-only multipole mass spectrometer; a gate for providing a repulsive DC or AC barrier downstream to an exit of the RF-only multipole mass spectrometer; an ion detection system situated downstream from the DC or AC barrier for measuring an ion current derived from ions that overcome the repulsive barrier. RF-only detection scheme and simultaneous detection of multiple ions

Systems and methods are provided for shaping an effective transmission window used to select precursor ions for a precursor mass range of a sequential windowed acquisition experiment. For at least one precursor mass range, an ion transfer function is selected that is a function of mass using a processor. A quadrupole mass filter that transmits ions from a sample is instructed to produce two or more transmission windows over time using the processor. The two or more transmission windows are produced to cumulatively create an effective transmission window for the at least one precursor mass range with a shape described by the ion transfer function.

Systems and methods for arbitrary quadrupole transmission windowing

In some embodiments, a quantitative analysis of at least one ion signal associated with a sample, which is detected by a mass spectrometer having at least two tandem quadrupole instruments, is employed to select one of the following operational modes for further mass analysis of the sample: (a) utilizing both quadrupole instruments as mass resolving filters, and (b) utilizing one quadrupole instrument as a mass resolving filter and utilizing the other as a linear ion trap. A method for obtaining fragment ions having product ion spectrum with a mixture of high, medium and lower energy product ions. The method includes (a) providing a selected RF field to an ion optical element upstream of an ion containment field; (b) transmitting ions through the ion optical element and into the ion containment field such that the selected RF field determines, at least in part, a selected kinetic energy profile of the ions within the ion containment field, wherein the selected kinetic energy profile is selected to fragment the ions to concurrently provide a plurality of groups of product ions; and (c) detecting each group of product ions in the plurality of groups of product ions.
