A cooling system is disclosed. The cooling system may have a heat source, a heat exchanger, and a coolant pump located between the heat exchanger and the heat source to direct coolant from the heat exchanger to the heat source. The cooling system may also have a valve located between the heat source and the heat exchanger. The valve may be movable to vary a rate of coolant flow through the heat exchanger and around the heat exchanger to the coolant pump. The cooling system may further have a sensor located at an inlet of the heat source to generate a signal indicative of coolant temperature at the inlet, and a controller in communication with the valve and the sensor. The controller may be configured to move the valve based on the temperature of the coolant at only the inlet of the heat source.

Systems and methods provide engine state-based control of software functions. In one implementation, a system is provided that includes an engine and an engine control module. The engine control module determines a state of the engine and stores the determined state as an engine state variable. The engine state variable is interpretable by a plurality of components.

Engine state-based control of software functions

A method of controlling a common rail fuel system for an engine is disclosed. The method includes delivering fuel to a fuel injector fluidly coupled to a common rail. The common rail is fluidly coupled to a fuel tank through a pump. The method also includes sending a signal to the fuel injector to deliver a first quantity of fuel to the engine. The first quantity being indicative of a desired power from the engine. The method further includes detecting a fuel transfer pressure upstream of the pump, and derating the engine as a function of the detected fuel transfer pressure. The derating includes decreasing the first quantity of fuel.

Common rail fuel control system

A method and apparatus for controlling timing of an internal combustion engine having a piston located in a cylinder. The method and apparatus includes determining a first angular position of a crankshaft at a first location along a longitudinal axis of the crankshaft, determining a second angular position of the crankshaft at a second location along the longitudinal axis, determining a level of deformation of the crankshaft as a function of a difference between the first and second angular positions, determining an actual position of the piston as a function of the crankshaft deformation, comparing the actual piston position to a desired piston position, and controlling timing of an event to initiate combustion in the cylinder as a function of a difference between the actual and desired piston positions.
