A microwave susceptor material which comprises a substrate such as paper or paperboard treated with a polar organic compound having microwave interactive characteristics. A salt, which is soluble in the polar organic compound, can be added to alter the microwave heating performance of the material. The invention provides susceptor materials useful for cooking food items in a microwave oven with enhancement of the quality of the cooked food, such as the browning and crisping of the food surface. The susceptor materials are formed by treatment of the substrates with the polar organic compounds under conditions that cause the polar organic compounds to penetrate the substrate.

Treatment of paperboard with polar organic compounds to provide

A microwave cooking tray for microwave ovenable foodstuffs which usually display browned or crisped areas upon conventional oven cooking. The container is formed from a one piece blank of dielectric material, such as paperboard, which is bent and folded to form a trough shaped tray. A microwave interactive component included in the blank provides thermal heating effects such as browning and crisping for foodstuff placed in the tray and heated in a microwave oven. The tray is foldable to a flat configuration to facilitate shipment and storage. In one embodiment, the tray is flat on its entire upper portion when cooking.

Paperboard container for microwave cooking

An ovenable food tray for cooking foodstuffs, such as frozen foodstuffs, in an oven of either the microwave or conventional type. The tray is formed from a flat, unitary laminate blank by deforming the blank in any conventional male and female die apparatus under pressure and heat. The laminate includes a food contacting PET bi-axially oriented film coating adhered to a paperboard base stock by means of a crosslinkable adhesive. The use of such a coating and such an adhesive formulation permits use of the tray in oven temperatures to about 400 degrees F. without delamination of the coating from the paperboard or cracking of the coating.

An ovenable food tray formed from paperboard, the food-containing surface of which is coated with a food grade resin. The other surface of the paperboard is adhered to a paper coated with an essentially nonburning coating. This paperboard-adhesive-paper laminate yields improved flame resistance, particularly in electric ovens where the food tray may be accidentally placed very near an oven heating element.

Ovenable paperboard food tray

A microwave ovenable package including a layer of material that will convert a portion of the microwave energy to heat and a layer of paperboard interposed between the energy-converting layer and the food in the package which is to be cooked and browned. The energy-converting layer may be carried on a plastic film, the latter being adhered to the side of the paperboard layer which does not contact the food. An additional layer of paperboard may be used to sandwich the energy-converting layer and the plastic film between layers of paperboard. The heat from the energy-converting layer provides a surface heating effect on the food such as browning, crisping, or singeing. The presence of the paperboard layer between the energy-converting layer and the food prevents contamination of the food which might otherwise occur due to the degradation of the plastic in those cases where the microwave cooking causes the energy-converting layer to reach a temperature higher than intended.
