Method for preparing 2-alkenyl-2-oxazolines

Compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents C.sub.1 to C.sub.20 alkyl-substituted benzyl, or

A novel process is disclosed for increasing the amount of grafted polymer formed during the production of polyamide-modified macroporous polystyrene/divinylbenzene cross-linked beads. Greater selectivity for oxazolination and/or oxazination (grafting) of the chloromethylated polystyrene (CMPS) beads over homopolymer formation is achieved by forming an iodized cross-linked vinyl-addition polymer which is then contacted with an excess of oxazoline or oxazine until up to about 50 percent of said oxazoline or oxazine monomer is reacted. Subsequent hydrolysis of these polyamide-modified resins produces polyamine anion-exchange resins which exhibit greater than 2 times the weak base capacities of conventional anion-exchange resins.

A method for reducing the snagging of fabrics involves the application to the fabric of an emulsion of a chlorinated solvent as the continuous phase and as the dispersed phase, an aqueous latex of a polymer of from about 25 to 50 weight percent of a hydroxy lower alkyl acrylate, from about 6 to 12 weight percent acrylonitrile, from about 40 to 60 weight percent of a lower alkyl acrylate having from two to eight carbon atoms in the alkyl group and from about 1 to 5 weight percent acrylic acid wherein said polymer is of a high enough molecular weight to be insensitive to chlorinated solvents and water and after application and thereafter desolvating, dewatering and curing the polymer on the fabric.

Novel cellulosic sizing agents are described. They are ring-opened aziridinyl homopolymers of ##EQU1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogen or lower alkyl; R.sub.3 is hydrogen or methyl; R.sub.4 is an organic hydrophobic group (e.g., C.sub.8 -C.sub.24 alkyl radical); and X is oxygen or amido nitrogen. The above homopolymers can also be blended with cationic starch to form useful sizing compositions. These sizing agents are normally employed as aqueous emulsions. E.g., paper having excellent sizing properties was prepared from a paper pulp containing a mixture of cationic starch and poly[stearyl 3-(1-aziridinyl)propionate].
