A method and apparatus controlling the lateral position of a moving web of material having a central longitudinally extending web axis extending generally parallel to the direction of movement of the web so as to maintain the central longitudinally extending axis of the web at a substantial constant lateral position relative a fixed longitudinally extending axis associated with a fixed web alignment station based upon the detected longitudinal distance between certain portions of a series of longitudinally spaced apart, substantially identical, generally transversely extending indicia in a longitudinally extending indicia path parallel to the central longitudinal axis of the web.

An apparatus for monitoring the phasing relationship of a moving web of material of the type having a repeating series of graphics patterns thereon which repeat at ordinarily constant distance repeat length intervals of web travel and which contain separate repeating indicia portions which define a repeating indicia set which are positioned in a repeating indicia path extending longitudinally of the web comprising: an indicia detection device for providing an indicia detection pulse signal; a web travel sensing device for providing a web movement signal; an indicia profiling device for processing the indicia pulse signal and the web monitoring signal for generating a unique indicia image for each of the repeating indicia in a selected repeat length portion of the web; an indicia image storage device for identifying and storing the indicia images from a first selected repeat length portion of the web; a register indicia designation device for initially designating one of the repeating indicia to be register indicia; a register indicia sensing device for providing a register indicia pulse signal having pulses which in normal operation corresponds to the detection of the selected register indicia; a register indicia verification device for verifying that the repeating indicia which is in synchronization with said register indicia pulse signal is the currently designated register indicia; and a register indicia correction device for designating the indicia that is in synchronization with said register indicia pulse signal as the register indicia and replacing the previously designated register indicia therewith when the indicia image of the current register indicia is not verified to be the indicia which is in synchronization with the register indicia pulse signal.

An apparatus for treating a moving web of laminated composite material of the type having a relatively thin film layer adhered to a relatively thick paper layer for eliminating the tendency of the web to curl toward the film layer side thereof subsequent to being stored on a spool with the film layer of the web positioned inwardly of the paper layer of the web, the film layer and paper layer each having an exposed surface and an attached surface, the attached surfaces of the layers being adhered together, the paper layer having an outwardly positioned thickness portion which terminates at the exposed surface thereof, an inwardly positioned thickness portion which terminates at the attached surface thereof and an intermediately positioned thickness portion positioned between the outwardly positioned thickness portion and the inwardly positioned thickness portion, the outwardly positioned thickness portion being relatively stretched, the inwardly positioned thickness portion being relatively shrunk, the intermediately positioned thickness portion being relatively unstretched and unshrunk, the film layer being relatively shrunk through storage of the composite web on the spool, comprising: composite web supply means, film heating means, paper heating means; the stretching occurring in the inwardly positioned portion of the paper and in the film layer and the shrinking occurring in the outwardly positioned portion of the paper layer being of an amount whereby oppositely positioned portions of the film layer and the paper layer of the web are of substantially equal length in an unstressed state subsequent to treatment by the apparatus whereby the tendency of the composite web to curl toward the film layer side is eliminated.

A laminating apparatus for laminating plastic film material to a paper backing material to form a laminated composite. The apparatus comprises mechanical stretch control means for controlling the stretch or relaxation of the film material prior to lamination with the paper material. The apparatus also comprises means for monitoring the amount of film stretch in the laminated composite and providing data therefrom to a data processing unit which provides control signals to operate the mechanical stretch controlling means. Speed control means are additionally provided for each of the paper supply means, film supply means and composite web take up means.

A device for forming a moving web of laminated composite material having window portions therein from a moving continuous web of plastic film material and a moving continuous web of paper material. The device comprises cutter means for repeatingly cutting spaced apart perforated window patterns in the paper web and a wetting means for wetting the film web at spaced apart target areas having shapes substantially identical to the perforated window patterns. The device further comprises phasing means having both a coarse mode and a fine mode of operation for providing accurate registry of the perforated window patterns and the wetted target areas. A wetting synchronization means is also described which synchronizes the wetting means with the film target areas whereby the target areas and only the target areas are wetted by the wetting means. Means for removing a paper chad portion from the perforated window patterns subsequent to lamination is also described.
