An electromagnetic flowmeter comprising a non-conductive body having a central channel, first and second diametrically opposed cavities extending from the channel, and third and fourth cavities positioned, relative to liquid flow through the central channel, upstream and downstream of the first and second cavities, respectively. First and second self-sealing measuring electrodes are respectively positioned in the first and second cavities, and third and fourth self-sealing grounding electrodes are respectively positioned in the third and fourth cavities. Each of the electrodes has a tip and a multiplicity of saw-tooth edges extending outwardly from the periphery of the electrode. Each of the saw-tooth edges has a crest, a face normal to a longitudinal axis of the electrode and extending from the crest to the periphery, and a face at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the electrode and extending from the crest to the periphery closer to the tip than where the normal face reaches the periphery. This configuration, in addition to providing a self-sealing effect between the electrodes and the cavities into which the electrodes are inserted, facilitates insertion of the electrodes into the cavities, and hinders withdrawal of the electrodes from the cavities.

A method of manufacturing an electromagnetic flowmeter and an electromagnetic flowmeter wherein the measuring electrodes do not protrude into the flow channel and instead form part of the flow channel wall. The method for manufacturing the flowmeter includes the steps of forming the flowmeter body with a central channel smaller than that which is desired for final flowmeter use, inserting into the body electrodes with tapered tips which extend into the central channel, and reaming the central channel whereby the central channel is enlarged to its final diameter and the electrode tips are cut. The cut tips form concave cross sectional areas which are continuous and flush with the central channel wall. The resultant flowmeter has measuring electrodes which do not protrude into the channel. This substantially reduces turbulent flow of the measured liquid as it passes through the measuring region of the flowmeter, and a more accurate reading results.

An electromagnetic flowmeter having a single bobbin coil for developing a magnetic field through which a liquid passes. The single bobbin coil is a part of an electromagnet unit which also includes first and second pole pieces which are disposed symmetrically about the channel through which the liquid passes. The pole pieces are focused toward the liquid flow channel to develop a uniform magnetic field which extends through the channel.

An electromagnetic flowmeter comprising a body having a central channel having a measuring region, an inlet region and an outlet region. Relative to liquid flow through the central channel, the inlet region is upstream of the measuring region, and the outlet region is downstream of the measuring region. The inlet region and outlet region have diameters substantially greater than the diameter of the measuring region. A transition region extends between the inlet region and the measuring region, and a transition region extends between the measuring region and the outlet region. First and second cavities are respectively positioned in the inlet region and the outlet region, and third and fourth diametrically opposed cavities extend from the measuring region of the central channel. First and second grounding electrodes are respectively positioned in the first and second cavities, and third and fourth measuring electrodes are respectively positioned in the third and fourth cavities.

An electromagnetic flowmeter having a frame assembly formed by an octagonal metal frame within which are mounted a pair of electromagnets and a pair of electrode holders. The electromagnets are secured to one set of opposing sides of the frame along a first transverse axis which passes through the geometric center of the frame while the holders are secured to another set of opposing sides along a second tranverse axis which passes through the center at right angles to the first axis. The frame assembly is encapsulated within a generally cylindrical plastic insulating body of polymeric material having a longitudinal bore therein defining a flow conduit whose flow axis passes through the geometric center of the frame and is perpendicular both to the first and second transverse axes whereby when the fluid flows therethrough it intersects the magnetic lines of flux produced by the electromagnets. The resultant voltage induced in the fluid is a function of its flow rate and is picked up by the electrodes to provide a flow rate signal. To prevent the plastic body from cracking as a result of differences between the thermal coefficient of expansion of the metal frame and that of the polymeric material, an interfacial layer is formed therebetween having elastomeric properties.

An electrode wiring harness for an electromagnetic flowmeter which includes a non-magnetic metal spool having an insulating liner to define a flow conduit for the fluid to be metered, a pair of electrodes being mounted on the spool at diametrically-opposed positions along a transverse axis which is normal to the axis of the electromagnet assembly. The assembly is excited by a pulsatory wave to establish a magnetic field in the conduit that is intercepted by the fluid to induce a signal in the electrodes as a function of flow rate. The harness is constituted by a printed circuit board connected to the electrodes and disposed in a plane parallel to the electrode axis. The board has a conductive pattern thereon providing wiring from the electrodes to an external converter, the pattern including a loop coaxial with the electromagnet axis, whereby voltages induced therein by the magnetic field are balanced out.

An apparatus for injection-molding an insulating liner onto the surface of a metal spool to be included in an electromagnetic flowmeter in which the fluid to be metered is conducted through the lined spool. The spool is composed of a cylindrical body having end flanges and a pair of diametrically-opposed circular bosses disposed midway between the flanges to receive the meter electrodes. To carry out injection molding, the spool is supported within a mold which defines a liner cavity conforming to the inner surface of the cylindrical body and to the faces of the end flanges, the liner cavity communicating with cavities conforming to the inner surface of the electrode bosses. The molding material is injected into a sprue in the mold which runs along the longitudinal axis of the spool toward the hub of a runner extending radially toward an axisymmetric ring gate opening into the liner cavity at a point adjacent the boss cavities. The molding material passing through the ring gate then flows in opposite directions in the liner cavity to evenly fill this cavity as well as the boss cavities without creating weld lines therein.

Apparatus for injection-molding a liner onto a metal spool

An in-line contactor adapted to bring about intimate contact between a disinfectant and a wastewater stream to produce a reaction between the disinfectant and pathogens effecting kills in a manner minimizing unwanted side effects. The wastewater stream is pumped through the successive stages of the contactor, the first of which is an input section having a converging nozzle that projects the stream at high velocity into a throat. The throat feeds the stream in a highly turbulent state through a mixing section, the resultant vacuum created within the throat acting to draw a disinfectant such as aqueous or gaseous chlorine from a disinfectant supply into the mixing section where it is thoroughly intermingled with the turbulent stream before the stream is discharged from the contactor through a diverging pressure-recovery output section.

In-line disinfectant contactor

An ejector assembly adapted to intermingle a gas, such as chlorine, with process liquid or water to form a solution which is discharged from the assembly. Included in the assembly is an ejector body within which is disposed a nozzle whose output is spaced from the inlet of a throat to define an interaction zone which communicates with a gas supply. Liquid under pressure is fed into the nozzle and is forced thereby at high velocity into the interaction zone to create a vacuum acting to draw gas from the gas supply. The gas interacts with the liquid to form a solution that is discharged via the throat through suitable piping to a point of application. Coaxially disposed within the contoured bore of the nozzle is a plug which defines an annular liquid flow path, the plug having an enlarged flange thereon which cooperates with the contoured bore to form alternate restrictions and expansions in the flow path that render the liquid highly turbulent and produce cavitation, thereby enhancing the interaction of liquid and gas in the interaction zone to provide a higher vacuum level of operation to permit critical flow control at no additional cost.
