Methods for the simple, reliable application and local controlled release of selected anti-arrhythmia drugs from a hydrogel applied to or polymerized on the tissues of the heart or its vessels, especially in conjunction with cardiac bypass or other cardiac surgery, have been developed. The anti-arrhythmia drugs are incorporated into hydrogels that biodegrade and adhere to the tissues to which the anti-arrhythmic drugs are to be delivered. The hydrogels may be formed in vitro or in vivo. In a preferred embodiment, the drugs are effective to lengthen atrial effective refractory period. A particularly preferred drug is amiodarone.

Controlled release of anti-arrhythmic agents

Methods for the prevention of adhesion formation involve the administration of therapeutic formulations to a patient which include antibodies to TIMP-1 or TIMP-1 antisense oligonucleotides. The formulations can also include suitable carriers, such as a hyaluronic acid matrix, for optimal administration. The treatment procedure can be initiated and monitored by a diagnostic procedure which involves the detection of elevated levels of TIMP-1 in a patient.

An improved method and composition for preventing damage to tissue and/or organs during surgery and during harvesting, implanting, manufacture and manipulation of bioprostheses therefrom. Tissue surfaces and surgical articles involved in the surgery and bioprostheses are coated with a solution of a hydrophilic, polymeric material prior to manipulation of the tissue and/or organs during surgery. The composition comprises a solution of a polymeric material having a molecular weight of about 50,000 D or above having a concentration of from about 0.01% to about 15% by weight.

Tissue surfaces and surgical articles involved in the surgery are coated with a solution of a hydrophilic polymeric material prior to manipulation of the tissue during surgery. The composition comprises a solution of hyaluronic acid, a salt thereof or mixtures thereof having a molecular weight of from about 50,000 to less than about 500,000 and having a concentration of from about 0.01 to about 15% by weight.
