A wet oxidation/reduction electrolytic cell, system, and method for the remediation of contaminated water is disclosed. A porous electrode of large surface area produces powerful oxidizing agents in situ without having to add any reagents, oxidizers, or catalysts to the water to be treated. Further, by the appropriate selection of electrode material, organic contaminants may be absorbed onto the surface of the electrode and subsequently oxidized to provide a dynamically renewable porous electrode surface. Flow rates, and power requirements may be tailored to the specific moieties to be removed, thus allowing local treatment of specific waste streams resulting in direct discharge to a publicly owned treatment works (POTW) or surface water discharge. A novel feature of this invention is the ability to remove both organic and metal contaminants without the addition of treatment reagents or catalysts.

Disclosed are methods for extending the cycle life of solid, secondary electrolytic cells employing a solid electrolyte which methods comprise (a) charging the discharged electrolytic cell at a rate of from at least about 0.1 to about 0.5 milliamp per square centimeter; (b) interrupting charging step (a) and conducting a high magnitude discharge pulse in said cell of from about 10 seconds to 2 minutes in duration; and (c) reestablishing the charging rate of step (a) and maintaining this rate until the potential of the electrolytic cell increases by at least 0.5 volts.

For maintaining cervical and spinal alignment during emergency immobilization, extrication, transportation, and radiological examination of a patient, a support used in combination with various fastening devices comprising a sheet with a curved cross-section made of radiotranslucent buoyant material which has a thin profile yet provides strong and rigid support. The sheet is contoured to support the patient's head, shoulders, and main body, preventing post-incident injury and discomfort. The margins of the support have a plurality of slots which serve both as handling means and as a means for attaching the fastening devices and are arcuately displaced for ease of access with minimal hazardous movement of the patient. Moreover, the head-supporting portion has a plurality of guide notches and a Velcro fastener for attaching fastening devices, with similarly arcuately displaced access. The support has a short form which is used for securing the upper torso under conditions which preclude the use of the long form. The long form of the support provides management of the full body during emergency extrication, transportation and radiological examination, for use in combination with the short form and for use as a litter.
