A system and method for monitoring a patient over a network. In one embodiment, the system includes a network; a connection device configured to connect to the network, the connection device including a reporter that transmits reports to the network; a user interface device in communication with the network, the user interface device including a display and a gateway; a network management system in communication with the network, the network management system comprising an active alert system list listing each user interface device having a gateway that has registered with the network management system; a communications interface in communication with the network, the communications interface receiving reports from the reporter and transmitting reports to the network management system; wherein the network management system determines if a report received from the communications interface is to be sent to the user interface device as an alert.

The present invention relates to an interface device and a method for communication between a medical device and a computer system. In some embodiments, the interface device comprises a conversion device and/or a processor-transceiver and a memory in electrical communication with the conversion device, wherein the memory contains data to instruct the conversion device and/or the processor transceiver how to communicate with the medical device.

The central authority routes data that has been converted to a second protocol for display by the user interface. The system generates alarms when a data value from one medical device reaches an alarm limit; deviates from a setting as a deviation alarm; and when a combination of data values from more than one medical device occurs, as a combination alarm; and if an alarm is triggered more than a predetermined number of times, as a consecutive alarm.

A one way forward valve is coupled to the bag structure to permit respiratory gas to flow to the patient when the bag structure is compressed. A one way exit valve is employed to allow respiratory gases to be pulled from the person's airway upon decompression of the bag structure to produce a negative intrathoracic pressure.

Network monitoring systems for medical devices

The invention features an exhalation assist device for adjusting the airway resistance in an exhalation circuit of a medical ventilator. The device includes a set of pressure, airflow and airway sensors, a controlling processor, a user interface, and a ventilatory unit in communication with a medical ventilator. Data relating to pressure within the ventilatory unit and data relating to exhalation airflow, exhalation circuit pressure and exhalation circuit resistance are provided to the controlling processor by the sensors. The controlling processor compares measured and calculated values for airway pressure, airflow, airway resistance and applied negative pressure with desired values that have been entered by a clinician. Based on these calculations, the controlling processor transmits a signal that will change the applied negative pressure applied to the exhalation circuit by the ventilatory unit. The amount of negative pressure applied during the breathing cycle is varied by the controlling processor so that the amount of exhalation assist increases proportionately with the amount of exhalation flow and so that the amount of pressure within the patient airway remains constant at a level greater that zero and less than PEEP.

Ventilator control system and method

The invention features an exhalation assist device for adjusting the airway resistance in an exhalation circuit of a medical ventilator. A pneumatic system is provided for a ventilator is provided for controlling inspired and expired patient gas flow during respiratory therapy. The pneumatic system includes a pneumatic circuit for controlling a supply of one or more selected gases to a patient and a disposable patient breathing circuit for isolating exhaled patient gasses from the pneumatic circuit. A method and apparatus for providing circulatory and respiratory assistance in a patient. The method includes the steps of determining the onset and duration of at least one portion of the cardiac cycle of the patient and increasing the intrathoracic pressure in the patient by introducing a volume of a respiratory gas into the lungs of the patient during the ventricular systolic portion of the cardiac cycle. The method includes reducing the intrathoracic pressure in the patient by extracting, under either subambient or substantially ambient respiratory gas pressure, a portion of the volume of the respiratory gas from the lungs of the patient, beginning during the diastolic portion of the same cardiac cycle. An apparatus for providing circulatory and respiratory assistance in a patient includes a processing device for determining the onset and duration of at least one portion of the cardiac cycle and a ventilation controller for increasing the intrathoracic pressure in the patient by introducing a volume of a respiratory gas into the lungs of the patient during the ventricular systolic portion of the patient's cardiac cycle and for reducing the intrathoracic pressure in the patient by extracting, under subambient or substantially ambient pressure, a portion of the volume of the respiratory gas from the lungs of the patient beginning during the diastolic portion of the same cardiac cycle.

Cardiac synchronous ventilation

Improved cardiocirculatory assistance is provided to a patient by detecting the onset of ventricular ejection in the cardiac cycle of the patient and selectively increasing intrathoracic pressure of the patient in relative phase with respect to the onset of ventricular ejection. Cardiocirculatory output may be monitored and the relative phase of the increase in intrathoracic pressure with respect to the onset of ventricular ejection adjusted to maximize cardiac output. The intrathoracic pressure is increased once every N cardiac cycles where N is a positive integer. The patient interface may include apparatus for supplying high frequency respiration pulses in synchronism with the cardiac cycle. Alternately, or in addition, the pulses may be used to inflate a bladder in contact with the thorax.
