A content delivery network (CDN) is enhanced to enable mobile network operators (MNOs) to provide their mobile device users with a content prediction and pre-fetching service. Preferably, the CDN enables the service by providing infrastructure support comprising a client application, and a distributed predictive pre-fetching function. The client application executes in the user's mobile device and enables the device user to subscribe to content (e.g., video) from different websites, and to input viewing preferences for such content (e.g.: 'Sports: MLB: Boston Red Sox'). This user subscription and preference information is sent to the predictive pre-fetching support function that is preferably implemented within or across CDN server clusters. A preferred implementation uses a centralized back-end infrastructure, together with front-end servers positioned in association with the edge server regions located nearby the mobile core network. The predictive pre-fetch service operates on the user's behalf in accordance with the user preference information.

Disclosed herein are methods and systems for detecting congestion in a mobile network and for determining those end-user mobile devices that are affected. In one embodiment, a server communicates with a set of mobile devices, on which have been installed a suitable client application. At certain times, the server initiates a congestion detection routine. The server may request the mobile devices to report on their current wireless attachment point to the mobile network. The server can then test for congestion by performing a data transfer between itself and the mobile clients, which may be in either direction. The server can use the results to determine whether a given attachment point is congested. In one embodiment, a dynamically selected, random subset of mobile devices for a current attachment point are tested, and the result is imputed to all mobile devices similarly situated.

The present invention is a method and apparatus for obtaining information transmitted between a source station and a destination station in a non broadcast multiple access network. A connection between the source station and a server for the destination station is established. The server has a cache containing the information. The source station transmits a request packet having parameters relating to the information to the server. The source station receives a reply packet containing the information from the server. The reply packet matches the parameters of the request packet.

A system, device, and method for supporting multiple virtual private networks in an MPOA/NHRP communication network involves encoding a Virtual Private Network (VPN) identifier in certain MPOA/NHRP control messages in order to associate those MPOA/NHRP control messages with a particular VPN, and using an in-band signaling technique to add/remove VPNs to/from a connection. Packets from multiple VPNs are multiplexed over the connection. Each packet is associated with a particular VPN. If packets do not inherently include information from which the VPN can be ascertained, then a VPN identifier is encoded in the packet. The VPN identifier may be encoded in the packet via a tagging mechanism, in which each VPN is associated with a unique tag, and a tag is included in each packet. The VPN identifier may alternatively be encoded in the packet by including the VPN identifier in the packet, for example, in a header (such as an LLC/SNAP header) within the packet.

An optical switch router performs both optical switching and traditional routing. The optical switch router includes optical interfaces for coupling to one or more incoming optical fibers and to one or more outgoing optical fibers, and also includes a number of traditional router ports. Individual incoming optical data streams received over the incoming optical fiber(s) can be selectively passed through to one or more of the outgoing optical fibers or 'dropped' from the optical communication path for traditional routing. Routed traffic, which can be received over the router ports or from the 'dropped' optical data streams, can be forwarded over optical data streams that are &#x201c;added&#x201d; to the outgoing optical fiber(s). The &#x201c;added&#x201d; optical data streams may be added to the outgoing optical fiber(s) at any unused wavelengths, including, but not limited to, the wavelengths of the &#x201c;dropped&#x201d; optical data streams.

A system, device, and method for supporting virtual private networks in a label switched communication network utilizes an extended Next Hop Resolution Protocol in order to establish a label switched path for a particular virtual private network. Specifically, label information and a corresponding virtual private network identifier are carried in certain Next Hop Resolution Protocol messages. A label request and a corresponding virtual private network identifier is carried in Next Hop Resolution Protocol Resolution Request messages that are forwarded hop-by-hop by a number of devices along a forward path. Label mapping information and a corresponding virtual private network identifier are carried in Next Hop Resolution Protocol reply messages that are forwarded hop-by-hop by the devices in the forward path. In various embodiments of the invention, the label information and the corresponding virtual private network identifier may be carried in a type-length-value field, and the Next Hop Resolution Protocol reply messages may be Next Hop Resolution Protocol Resolution Reply messages or novel Next Hop Resolution Protocol Label Mapping messages.

The standard next hop resolution protocol (NHRP) essentially is extended to provide peer to peer, i.e., source station to destination station, communication regarding resource availability and intemetwork layer address to NBMA subnetwork layer address resolution, rather than client-server communication between a source station and a server that communicates with the source station on behalf of the destination station, as is the case in standard NHRP.

An apparatus comprising a network interface coupled to a data network, a network address translator and a controller. The network interface may receive network traffic from the communicatively coupled data network adhering to any of a number of alternative network protocols. The network address translator identifies network session information within the received network traffic adhering to any of a number of alternative protocols. The controller selects network traffic to be cached based, at least in part, on the network session information identified by the network address translator.

Method and apparatus for network caching and load balancing

A method for distributing Network Address Translator (NAT) translation table information among border routers associated with a routing domain using the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) Opaque Link State Advertisement (LSA) option protocol. The NAT translation table information is included in an application specific field following the LSA header. LS type 9 LSA packets are used to limit the flooding scope to the local network segments attached to the border router. Network address information, i.e., local network address and corresponding global network address, are transmitted in the application specific field of the Opaque LSA packet. The Opaque LSA packets are exchanged between a group of interconnected Opaque LSA capable border routers so that the border routers can maintain identical NAT translation tables as necessary to forward data packets according to the NAT forwarding paradigm.

A method for distributing Network Address Translator (NAT) translation table information among border routers associated with a routing domain using the Server Cache Synchronization Protocol (SCSP). The NAT translation table information is included in one or more Cache State Advertisement Summary (CSAS) records in a SCSP Cache State Advertisement (CSA) message. Network address information, i.e., local network address and corresponding global network address, are transmitted in the CSA messages and exchanged between a group of interconnected SCSP capable border routers so that the border routers can maintain identical NAT translation tables as necessary to forward data packets according to the NAT forwarding paradigm.
