A biofeedback system that utilizes isochronic tone technology to augment EEG feedback by providing to a subject isochronic tones at the frequency of a targeted aspect of a subject's brain waves, such as the brain's naturally occurring peak energy in the particular EEG band or bands subject to the biofeedback. Isochronic tones are regular beats of a single tone that are formed by separate pulses of sound and silence. In addition, feedback can be provided to the subject in the form of pulsed light and pulsed tactile impulses that are delivered in the form of alternating presence and absence of light or tactile pressure.

A biofeedback method and system for use to train a person to develop useful degrees of voluntary control of personal electroencephalogram (EEG) activity. A plurality of EEG potentials from a plurality of locations on the head are individually amplified and filtered in accordance with strict criteria intended for processing in accordance within time constraints limited by natural neurological reactivity. Each resultant signal is processed to provide objective data on brain energies as a function of frequency. Data are presented in real time to the trainee in the form of preselected auditory tones and/or vibro-tactile stimuli indicating with high fidelity the details of EEG activity at a multiplicity of cortical sites. Features of auditory feedback promote learning as well as identification and elimination of spurious artifact states. At periodic intervals, the auditory feedback is supplemented by sensory presentation of digital scores summarizing performances in a metric proportional to brain energy output in the feedback parameters. The scores may be presented as illuminated numerical displays, aurally or both. The system is preferably in an environment designed to control the arousal level of the trainee and the degree of distractibility so as to maximize the learning of voluntary self-control.

A headset is provided for holding electrodes against a subject's head for extended periods of time which has several pairs of support poles or rods whereon several flexible electrode supporting bands attach that allow variable placement and holding of various electrodes in various regions on the head. The regions for placement are the occipital, the central and the frontal regions of the head. The electrode supporting bands are elastic and are attached by hook and eye means to opposing rods so that the bands can be slidably and flexibly adjustably mounted on the headset apparatus. This allows tension holding the electrodes against the subject's head to be adjusted for an optimum balance of comfort and contact.
