The invention is directed to processes for preparation of oxetane polymers, wherein an epoxide accelerant is reacted with one or more equivalents of a 3-monosubstituted oxetane or a 3,3-disubstituted oxetane, wherein the epoxide accelerant is selected from the group consisting of 2,2-substituted epoxide, 2,2,3-substituted epoxide, 2,2,3,3-substituted epoxide, and mixtures thereof. Also disclosed are oxetane polymers prepared by the processes of the invention.

The present invention includes vinyl ether functional oligomers and methods for their preparation, the method including alternating free radical copolymerization of a dialkyl maleate or dialkyl fumerate monomer with a multifunctional vinyl ether monomer in the presence of a solvent with a high chain transfer constant. Reactive adhesive compositions that can be activated with actinic radiation, manipulated for an extended time and then cured thermally are disclosed. The prepolymer mixture for the reactive adhesive contains a catalyst component and a monomer/oligomer component. The monomer or oligomer is chosen from oxetane monomers, oxirane monomers, oxetane oligomers and oxirane oligomers. The oxirane monomers and oligomers have at least one oxygen or sulfur of an ether or thioether in a position two or three carbons removed from the oxygen of the oxirane.

An apparatus for continuously monitoring a photopolymerization reaction in real time by optical pyrometry includes a housing having a chamber; a sample mount that may be disposed within the chamber; a light source for supplying light to induce a photopolymerization reaction in a monomer sample disposed on the sample mount; and an optical pyrometer that may be attached to the housing for measuring temperature of the monomer sample. The temperature of the sample with respect to time is used to monitor progress of the reaction. Another apparatus for monitoring a photopolymerization reaction combines optical pyrometry and infrared spectroscopy. An ultrafiltration membrane is modified to exhibit low protein fouling and yet maintains a greater fraction of the original membrane permeability and retention properties after modification. This is achieved by grafting monomer onto the surface of a highly photoactive membrane such as polyethersulfone, via the process of dipping the polymeric membrane into a solution containing one or more monomers and a chain transfer agent, removing the membrane from the solution, securing the membrane inside of a quartz vessel contained within another vessel of liquid filter, and irradiating the membrane with a UV light at a wavelength between the range of 280 nm and 300 nm. High density grafting and shorter grafted monomer chain length result in low protein fouling and retention of permeability.
