A femoral component for a prosthesis used in a total knee arthroplasty includes a posterolateral taper on the lateral condyle. The lateral and medial condyles of the femoral component are asymmetric to accommodate for the asymmetry of a resected lateral and medial condyle of a femur. The taper is designed to improve the fit of femoral component on the femur to eliminate or reduce overhang of the femoral component's lateral condyle, thereby reducing pain, irritation, stiffness, soreness, or any other symptoms of an improperly fitting prosthesis.

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for performing total hip arthroplasty with patient-specific guides. Pre-operative images of a pelvic region of a patient are taken in order to predefine the structure of the guides and corresponding implants. From the obtained image data an insertional vector for implanting an acetabular implant or component into an acetabulum of the patient is determined, wherein the insertional vector is coaxial with a polar axis of the acetabular component. Also from the obtained image data, a superior surface of the guides and implants can be shaped to match the acetabulum of the patient. A nub portion extending outwardly from the superior surface of the guides and implants is shaped to substantially match the shape of a fovea of the acetabulum. A guide portion of the guides forming a slot has a longitudinal axis coaxial with the determined insertional vector of a corresponding acetabular component.

Patient-specific total hip arthroplasty

IM revision tools include reamers with depth markings or stops, an impactor-extractor with a coupling for attaching to tools which are inserted into and removed from the IM canal, a resection guide tower to which a cutting block is attached and which includes a notch which serves as both a witness mark and a holder for a femoral collar, a reversible clean-up cutting block with a quick-connect clamp attachable to the guide tower for resecting the distal femur, a selection of spacer blocks for measuring the space between the femur to determine the size of the components to be installed, a multiple cut cutting guide for preparing the femur, a set of 5 and 10 mm trial wedges, a trial stem valgus adapter, femoral sizing indicators which include indications of anterior/posterior offset, a stabilizer box cutting template which is attachable to the multiple cut cutting guide, and anterior/posterior offset adapters for attaching the femoral component to the IM stem.

Methods and tools for femoral intermedullary revision surgery

IM tibia revision tools include a trial stem extender having multiple notches which serve both as depth witness marks and holders for a stop clip, a collection of different sized tibial templates, each template adapted to receive an angular offset positioning guide, a collection of offset bushings, each bushing each bushing having a different offset distance and each being adapted to cooperate with the trial stem extender and the angular offset positioning guide, a neutral bushing for locating the position of the implant boss relative to the tibia and for reaming the tibia to accept the boss of the implant, a fin punch guide and fin punch for preparing the tibia to receive the keel of the tibial component, and a tool for translating the angular offset measurement to the tibial component. Tibial components according to the invention have three parts: the baseplate portion, the offset portion, and the stem portion. Each portion is provided in a variety of sizes and the portions may be mixed and matched according to the measurements made with the tools described above. Methods for using the tools and the tibial components are also disclosed.

Methods and tools for tibial intermedullary revision surgery and associated tibial components

IM revision tools include reamers with depth markings or stops, an impactor-extractor with a coupling for attaching to tools which are inserted into and removed from the IM canal, a resection guide tower to which a cutting block is attached and which includes a notch which serves as both a witness mark and a holder for a femoral or tibial collar, a reversible clean-up cutting block with a quick-connect clamp attachable to the guide tower for resecting the distal femur and separate left and right clean-up cutting blocks for resecting the proximal tibia, a selection of spacer blocks for measuring the space between the tibia and femur to determine the size of the components to be installed, a multiple cut cutting guide for preparing the femur, a set of 5 and 10 mm trial wedges, a trial stem valgus adapter, femoral sizing indicators which include indications of anterior/posterior offset, a stabilizer box cutting template which is attachable to the multiple cut cutting guide, and anterior/posterior offset adapters for attaching the femoral component to the IM stem. The tools according to the invention are modular and can also be used in primary knee arthroplasty without IM fixation. The methods of the invention provide accurate location of bone cuts so that the revision prosthetic is correctly oriented relative the IM canal and the bone cuts.

Methods and tools for tibial intermedullary revision surgery and

An apparatus for use in total knee arthroplasty includes a tibia engaging plate which is coupled to an upstanding rack member, a drill bushing bracket coupled to the rack member by a lockable pinion member, and a femoral positioning jig which is rotatably coupled to the drill bushing bracket. The drill bushing bracket has a pair of spaced apart drill bushings which are dimensionally located to correspond in position to medial and lateral condyles of the femur. The centers of the drill bushings lie in a plane which is parallel to the plane in which the tibia engaging plate lies. The femoral positioning jig is provided with a pair of posterior skids, one for the lateral posterior condyle and one for the medial posterior condyle, a pair of holes for attaching the jig to the resected distal femur with spikes, and a pair of holes for receiving the two drill bushings. Two different femoral positioning jigs are provided, one for the right knee and one for the left knee. In both jigs, the hole for receiving the medial drill bushing is circular and the hole for receiving the lateral drill bushing is oblong or kidney shaped. This allows the positioning jig (and the femur) to rotate about the axis of the medial drill bushing. The positioning jigs are also each provided with angular indicia adjacent the lateral oblong hole and the drill bushing bracket is provided with left and right indicia indicating the axial center of each drill bushing.
