A computer program product having a non-transitory computer-readable medium including computer program logic encoded thereon that, when performed on a surround sound audio system that is configured to render left front, right front, and center front audio signals, and also render left and right near-field binaurally-encoded audio signals, causes the surround sound audio system to develop the left and right near-field binaurally-encoded audio signals, and provide the left near-field binaurally-encoded audio signal to a left non-occluding near-field driver and provide the right near-field binaurally-encoded audio signal to a right non-occluding near-field driver.

Various implementations include audio systems and methods for mixed rendering to enhance audio output. Certain implementations include an audio system having: at least one far-field speaker configured to output a first portion of an audio signal; and a pair of non-occluding near-field speakers configured to output a second portion of the audio signal in synchrony with the output of the first portion of the audio signal, where the second portion of the audio signal increases intelligibility of the speech content within the audio signal.

In some particular cases, a speaker system includes: at least two distinct loudspeakers each capable of outputting stereo audio on its own, wherein each loudspeaker comprises: a plurality of transducers, and a controller coupled with the plurality of transducers, where the controller in each loudspeaker is configured to: receive a left channel audio input signal and a right channel audio input signal; extract a center channel signal from the left channel audio input signal and the right channel audio input signal; and provide an audio output signal to at least one of the plurality of transducers for outputting the center channel signal.

An audio system with first and second discrete audio drivers that are in a listening space, wherein each driver is configured to radiate sound into the listening space, and wherein the radiated sound from each driver at a listening location in the listening space has a frequency, phase, and magnitude. The audio system is configured to modify a phase of the sound radiated by at least one of the first or second drivers such that a phase response difference between the first and second drivers at the listening location is closer to zero degrees than it was before the modification.
