A foam article for use in a seat cushion includes an open cell, polyurethane foam material that includes a base polyol; a crosslinker; an isocyanate; a surfactant; and water, that are reacted together to produce a seat cushion having dynamic and static performance specifications that are better than the performance characteristics for a traditional, high resilient material seat cushion, as well as other seating materials.

Polyurethane foam formulation, products and methods

A foam article, for use in a seat such as a seat cushion, includes an open cell, polyurethane foam material that includes a plant oil-based polyol material content greater than five percent and is produced from the reaction of a base polyol formulation blend including at least a portion of a plant oil-based polyol, a copolymer polyol including at least a portion of a plant oil-based polyol, water, a cross-linking agent, a catalyst, cell opener and a surfactant that are reacted with an isocyanate material for producing the seat cushion having performance specifications that are equivalent or better than the performance characteristics for a traditional petroleum oil-based polyol material seat cushion.

A process for improving vehicle seat craftsmanship by camouflaging a receiving surface on a predetermined vehicle component (e.g., a foam seat cushion) is described. The camouflaging conceals the vehicle component from observation. One example of the process includes designating a receiving surface area on the vehicle component and providing a covering material having an opaque characteristic. The covering material includes an opaque dye that bonds with the polyurethane foam that is poured into a mold with deionized water for solidification. Another example of the process further includes spraying the covering material according to a surface of the mold cavity which corresponds to the designated receiving surface area on the vehicle component.

Vehicle seat with improved craftsmanship

An energy absorbing lumbar seat insert for a vehicle seat is provided. The seat insert provides support for the user's lumbar area. The insert is preferably composed of high-density, energy absorbing polymerized material such as a polyurethane. Alternatively, the insert may be composed from other polymerized materials, including polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene, or any combination thereof. The insert may be made of a single polymer or a mixture, or may be composed of multiple layers of two or more different polymers. Attachment of the insert to the seat back may be accomplished by chemical or mechanical fastening. The insert may be molded to conform to the profile of the lumbar region of the back of a particular driver.
