This document describes a light-sealing gasket with crossbar force distribution. The gasket can be used in an electronic device with a sensor package that is capable of transmitting and receiving signals and is positioned behind a display of the device. The gasket provides a shield between the receive signals and the transmit signals, prevents signal crosstalk, and protects the delicate panel layer of the display. Use of this gasket in an electronic device allows manufacturers to add more features to the device and enrich the user experience.

In one general aspect, a method can include configuring a first connector of a particular type included in a first multipurpose port located on a first side of a computing device to connect the computing device to a first peripheral device, transporting one or more of power, high-speed data, and display data between the computing device and the first peripheral device using the first multipurpose port, configuring a second connector of the particular type included in a second multipurpose port located on a second side of the computing device to connect the computing device to a second peripheral device, and transporting one or more of power, high-speed data, and display data between the computing device and the second peripheral device using the second multipurpose port.

In one general aspect, a method can include determining an orientation of a plug inserted into a connector included in the computing device, providing a plurality of display data signals to a reordering switch included in the computing device, selecting, by the reordering switch and based on the determined orientation of the plug, a display data signal from the plurality of display data signals, providing the selected display data signal to at least one of a plurality of multiplexers, the plurality of multiplexers being orientated back-to-back, providing a data signal to the at least one of the plurality of multiplexers, enabling the at least one of the plurality of multiplexers, selecting the display data signal for output by the at least one of the plurality of multiplexers, and providing the selected display data signal to a contact included on the connector.

In one aspect, a cooling system is provided for use in computing devices, such as laptops, cell phones, and tablet computers. The cooling system includes a heat spreader coupled to a radiator via a heat pipe having a midline. The heat pipe includes a first end portion longitudinally extending along the midline, a second end portion longitudinally extending along the midline, and a mid-portion longitudinally extending along the midline. The mid-portion is located between the first end portion and the second end portion and it has a thickness that is greater than the thicknesses of both the first portion and the second portion thereby reducing the overall thermal resistance of the heat pipe.

In one general aspect, a method of coupling a base to a lid of a computing device using a hinge can include coupling a base hinge flange to the base, the base hinge flange being connected to a base hinge part that includes a knuckle including a toggle pivot, the toggle pivot coupled to and surrounding a first portion of a first shaft, and coupling a lid hinge flange to the lid, the lid hinge flange being connected to a main hinge part that includes a first cam, the lid hinge flange including a first lid main band and a second lid main band surrounding a first portion of a second shaft, the second shaft being parallel to the first shaft.

Aspects of the disclosure relate generally to active cooling or removing heat generated by a processor in a computing device. More specifically, a cooling system in a computing device may include a heatpipe which moves heat along a fin pack. The fin pack may include top and bottom ends as well as a plurality of fins. The fins may extend only a portion of the way between the ends thus creating an air duct. The air duct may allow debris to move along an edge of the fin and out of the computing device. The fins may also be curved to promote the forcing of debris through the fin pack while still allowing the heat to be expelled through the fins.

A device is disclosed as including a hinge disposed intermediate of a display and a keyboard. the hinge includes an at least partially cylindrical housing and a friction band, the hinge providing rotation of the display and the keyboard around a pivot axis extending longitudinally along the hinge. The friction band comprises one or more compression members configured to extend around the pivot axis and in a compressed configuration with an inner surface of the housing to create friction between the inner surface of the housing and an outer surface of the one or more compression members.

A base for a portable computing device may comprise a keyboard, a frame, a shaft, a mount, and a shaft engagement element. The keyboard may be configured to communicate with the portable computing device. The frame may surround the keyboard. The shaft may be rotationally attached to the frame. The rotational attachment of the shaft to the frame may have a friction greater than a force of gravity on the portable computing device. The mount may be configured to hold the portable computing device. The mount may define a shaft recess through which the shaft extends and in which the shaft freely rotates. The shaft engagement element may be configured to rotationally couple the mount to the shaft in response to the portable computing device being placed on the mount.

A method includes creating an opening in a first outer layer of a multilayer sheet of material, the sheet of material having three or more layers of material, including the first outer layer and a second outer layer. A selective etchant is introduced through the opening, where the etchant selectively etches an interior metal layer of the multilayer sheet of material compared with the first and second outer layers. The selective etchant is permitted to etch material of the interior metal layer under the first outer layer.
