A smoke chamber for determining the amount of visible smoke emitted by a foundry core/mold resin system is composed of an elongate chamber having a proximal end, a distal end, and sides. The chamber is fitted with air inlet at its proximal end, a smoke outlet at its distal end, and a sample station disposed between the air inlet and the smoke outlet. The sample station includes a sample holder and furnace for heating a sample placed in the sample holder. The chamber also includes a light assembly disposed along one side of the chamber from the sample station to the smoke outlet. A light detection assembly is disposed on a chamber side opposite the light assembly for detecting light emitted from the light assembly. The chamber also includes fan for drawing smoke from a heated sample placed in the sample holder to the smoke outlet. The corresponding method for determining the amount of visible smoke emitted by a foundry core/mold resin system includes placing a sample in the sample holder. The sample in the sample station is heated by the furnace to pyrolize the sample. The amount of visible smoke emitted by the pyrolized sample is measured with the light detection assembly. Desirably, the light detection assembly is composed of a plurality of discrete photodetection units, each of which is in. electrical connection with a recorder for recording the amount of visible light detected by each of the photodetection units.

Broadly, the present invention relates to furan no-bake foundry binders where bisphenol A tar (BPAT) is used to replace a portion of the furfuryl alcohol and any conventional filler optionally included in for binder formulation. Reduction in the amount of furfuryl alcohol in the foundry binder formulation may lead to a reduction in the cost and an improvement in early strength of these formulations. Accordingly, in a furan no-bake foundry binder of a resin derived from a major proportion of furfuryl alcohol and optionally fillers, the improvement which comprises at least a fraction of said furfuryl alcohol being bisphenol A tar. Bisphenol A tar also can replace at least a fraction of any filler included in the binder formulation.

Use of bisphenol a tar in furan no-bake foundry binders

This invention relates to polyurethane-forming cold-box binders and foundry mixes prepared with these binders. The binder comprises a polyol component and an organic polyisocyanate component. Foundry mixes are prepared by mixing the binder with a foundry aggregate. Foundry shapes (molds and cores) are prepared by shaping the mix and curing the foundry shape with a gaseous tertiary amine curing catalyst.

Polyurethane-forming cold-box binders and their uses

This invention relates to a process for casting a metal which uses assemblies of foundry shapes. The foundry shapes are held together with a solventless adhesive paste having urethane linkages. The foundry adhesive paste is a two component system comprising a prepolymer in the Part I and a curative in the Part II.

Ester cured no-bake foundry binder systems

The subject invention relates to a hot box process for forming foundry shapes. The foundry shapes are formed with a mixture of an aggregate and certain aqueous basic solutions of phenolic resole resins which act as binders. The use of these binders results in foundry shapes which are cured by heating at elevated temperatures without requiring an acid-generating curing catalyst.

An adhesive paste composition containing in admixture a resin component, a hardener component, a hydrophobic filler component and a curing agent.
