A method to monitor a torque transfer device configured to transfer torque within an electro-mechanical transmission mechanically-operatively coupled to an internal combustion engine and at least one electric machine includes executing a failure detection strategy in response to a detected slip condition of the torque transfer device. The failure detection strategy includes monitoring a magnitude of energy loss of the torque transfer device. A failure condition in the torque transfer device is detected when the magnitude of energy loss achieves a predetermined energy threshold.

A method for controlling the hybrid powertrain includes determining a transition window associated with torque output of one of the electric motors coupled to an element of the transmission. A noise reduction control scheme is executed when the torque output of the one of the electric motors coupled to the element of the transmission is within the transition window.

A method of operating a hybrid powertrain including an engine, an electric motor and a high voltage battery includes preventing fuel flow to the engine when the high voltage battery includes a state of charge at or above a pre-defined upper limit, and when the hybrid powertrain is operating in a second fueling condition in which fuel flow to the engine is preferably maintained. The engine is rotated with torque supplied by the electric motor to maintain rotation of the engine without producing any engine torque.

In an embodiment, the method includes determining whether a temperature of a battery pack in a battery pack module is above or below a first threshold, and providing a command to an electrically variable transmission module to select either a first mode or a second mode in which to operate, when the determination is made that the temperature of the battery pack is below the first threshold.
