A polymeric sponge includes cellulose fibers imbedded therein. The sponge is made by mixing water and cellulose fibers with a water-catalyzing prepolymer for chemical reaction thereof. The mixture is cured and granulated to size. The cellulose fibers enhance both the manufacturing process and the resulting sponge for increasing strength, durability, and performance thereof.

Abrasive shot is injected into a carrier stream of compressed gas. The shot and gas stream are directed against a pliant coating. The compressed gas expands at the coating for cooling thereof which decreases coating resiliency for enhancing stripping thereof by the impinging abrasive shot.

A workpiece includes an aperture bordering a surface at a shifting edge. A stream of pliant shot is discharged in a carrier fluid at the edge with a shallow angle of incidence. And, the workpiece is rotated to sweep the shot stream along the shifting edge for abrasion thereof.

Shifting edge scrubbing

A shield is placed next to a workpiece to form a passage therebetween. The workpiece and shield are rotated, and a stream of abrasive shot is blasted toward the spinning workpiece and shield to periodically enter the passage to selectively abrade the workpiece.

Shielded spin polishing

A nozzle includes a tube and a flared deflector extending coaxially from an outlet thereof. A stream of abrasive pliant shot is discharged through the nozzle and deflected radially outwardly from the deflector for abrading a shifting edge along an aperture in a workpiece surface.

Omnidirectional shot nozzle

A gas turbine engine nozzle includes outer and inner bands. Each of the bands includes segments circumferentially adjoining at corresponding splits. The splits of the inner band are circumferentially spaced from the splits of the outer band. A plurality of vanes are fixedly joined to the outer and inner segments which collectively define an accordion loadpath therethrough.

A fluid stream is discharged along a workpiece surface toward a boss thereof to form a boundary layer atop the surface. A stream of pliant shot is scrubbed across the boss for selectively abrading target material therefrom while the boundary layer protects the surface from abrasion.

Bilayer surface scrubbing

The surface of a workpiece is treated by discharging a stream of pliant shot in a carrier fluid at a shallow angle of incidence thereagainst. The shot is then scrubbed laterally along the surface for selectively removing target material therefrom.

Sustained surface scrubbing

A turbine airfoil includes pressure and suction sides extending longitudinally from root to tip, and chordally between leading and trailing edges. A striated discharge hole terminates outside the airfoil for discharging coolant therefrom.

Striated cooling hole

A free flow abrasive hole polishing system and method improves air flow and resultant component cooling efficiency for an apertured article. The free flow abrasive hole polishing system mixes an abrasive particle component with a carrier media to create a free flowing abrasive particle carrier media mixture. This mixture is pumped through apertures defined by aperture walls in the article to improve air flow and resultant cooling efficiency of the article. Since the abrasive particles have mass and velocity and the free flowing media does not have resistance to flow, the abrasive particles impinge on peaks of the aperture walls, predominantly removing high spots in the aperture walls.

A workpiece includes a surface adjoining an aperture. The aperture is filled with a plug to provide a step adjoining the surface. A stream of pliant shot in a carrier fluid is discharged at a shallow angle of incidence against the plug and directed toward the step for selective abrasion thereof.

Sustained surface step scrubbing

A process for manufacturing a component in which residual tensile stresses are present in the component surface as a result of the operation by which the surface was produced. The process generally entails removing residual tensile stresses and inducing compressive stresses in the surface of a component by controlled impacting of the surface with two or more jets of fluid. An additional benefit of this invention is that damaged surface regions of the component can be removed simultaneously with residual tensile stresses by abrading the damaged surface region with a jet of abrasive fluid. The fluid jet employed to abrade the component surface is preferably at a pressure of at least 1360 bar, while the fluid jet employed to induce compressive stresses in the component surface is preferably at a pressure of at least 1700 bar. The second fluid jet can be operated to remove any embedded abrasive grit remaining from the first fluid jet operation.

Method for surface enhancement by fluid jet impact

An electromagnetic peening apparatus includes a first electromagnetic coil having a first face configured to conform to a first surface of a workpiece, and a second electromagnetic coil having a second face configured to conform to a second surface of the workpiece. A carriage positions the first and second coils in abutting contact with the workpiece at respective first and second faces and surfaces. A power supply powers the coils to produce electromagnetic force therein to plastically deform the workpiece at the first and second surfaces to effect a compressive layer therein.
