The invention is based on the discovery of the epitope in the Stx2 protein for the 11 E1O antibody. The invention features compositions containing non-full length Stx2 polypeptides that include the 11 E1O monoclonal antibody epitope. The invention also features methods of producing anti-Stx2 antibodies specific for the 11 E1O epitope of the Stx2 protein. Additionally, the invention features methods for treating a subject having, or at risk of developing, a Shiga toxin associated disease (e.g., hemolytic uremia syndrome and diseases associated withandinfection) with a polypeptide that includes the 11 E1O epitope or with an anti-Stx2 antibody developed using the methods of the invention. Furthermore, the invention features the detection of Stx2 in a sample using the antibodies developed using the methods of the invention.

An apparatus, and particularly, a wafer carrier for polishing the face of a semiconductor wafer are provided. The wafer carrier forms a first cavity which can be pressure controlled to vary the shape of a face of a platen which contacts the wafer during polishing. A second cavity within the first cavity is provided. The second cavity can be independently pressure controlled to form a vacuum for holding the wafer against the platen surface or for forming a pressure stream to separate the wafer from the platen and/or to purge the holes in the surface of the platen. A non-contact displacement sensor capable of measuring a distance between the wafer carrier mount and the platen, may be provided. An endpoint detector capable of detecting a relative surface roughness of the wafer, to determine when the wafer has been sufficiently polished, may also be provided. A ring is peripherally located about an outer edge of the platen, and is mounted and positioned to resist lateral forces on the wafer during polishing. The ring is adjustably mounted so as to be variably and controllably vertically positioned, with respect to the wafer to help control standing waves in the polishing media and uneven polishing of the wafer surface.

A low profile gimbal system is provided to greatly reduce the generation of moments about a pivot point of the gimbal system during polishing processes. The gimbal system is adjustable so that a preferred balance between stiffness and friction may be selected as appropriate for a variety of different polishing conditions. A locking feature ensures that the adjustment setting is maintained during polishing.

Alkylthioethylamine salts are prepared by reacting certain alkenes with mercaptoethylamine salts in a glycol or glycol ether solvent in the presence of a free radical initiator. The product mixtures obtained are useful as antimicrobials as is or after the addition of inert formulation additives.

The concentration of alkali metal hydroxide contaminants in solutions of alkali metal alkoxides in alcohols is reduced to below about 0.1 percent by adding an alkyl alkanoate ester. For example, a solution of sodium methoxide in methanol containing about 0.04 percent sodium hydroxide was obtained by adding a small amount of methyl acetate. The alkali metal alkanoate salt formed as a by-product does not deleteriously affect most uses of such solutions.

A brush is rigidly attached to one end of a housing having a handle at the other end and, between the ends, a cylindrical opening supporting a rotor whose center of mass is displaced laterally from the axis of rotation. As the rotor turns, it exerts an unbalanced centrifugal force on the housing, causing it to oscillate. The rotor is preferably a single metal roller gyrating or rotating about the axis of the cylindrical opening, and it may be rotated by a tangential stream of fluid, e.g., water at utility district pressure. The rotor body may be solid or a hollow member filled with a heavy liquid such as mercury, and it is so supported that during rotation its outer peripheral surface approaches but does not touch the borewall of the opening in which it operates.

A tie clasp shaped generally like a safety pin and having a shirt link attached to its fixed back member. The novelty lies in so proportioning the clasp that it can be used to receive either the back pendant portion or both pendant portions of a four-in-hand necktie. When used only to receive the back pendant, the clasp is preferably made long enough to receive the usually relatively narrow rear pendant but not so long that it extends to either side of the usually rather broad front pendant, thus making the clasp invisible to an observer facing the wearer. Also when so used, the tie clasp has a forward member with a pointed free end, this member being movable between a closed position and an open position, and while open it is thrust into and then out of the rear fold of the front pendant without going completely through the thickness of the tie, thus securing both pendants while at the same time remaining invisible. In an optional form and use, the tie clasp is elongated to receive both pendants of the necktie in free hanging position. The short chain and crossbar of the shirt link keep the tie firmly anchored to the shirt front, and the front member of the tie clasp may be embellished with a jewel, monogram or other ornamentation. The front member may be pivotable between open and closed positions, or it may be made fixed, so that the main part of the clasp or band is simply a closed loop, defining an opening which is elongated in one direction and narrow in the other.
