A retention system in which rotor pole pieces are retained within complementarily shaped channels in a rotor hub, permanent magnets are secured between the pole pieces and within clamp members, and wedge-shaped pieces are used to apply positive locking forces along the axial length of each clamp member and of adjacent pole pieces. A curable resin preferably in disposed within gaps between the permanent magnets and the clamp members.

Pole retention configuration for electric machine rotors

An electromagnetic machine is provided. The machine includes a stator extending along a longitudinal axis and having an inner surface defining a rotor receipt cavity. The rotor extends along and is rotatable about the longitudinal axis within the rotor receipt cavity. A plurality of ring assemblies are supported on the rotor and a plurality of magnets are circumferentially spaced about the rotor and extend through the ring assembly. Each magnet is generally parallel to the axis of the rotor.

High speed rotor

A method for purifying contaminated water involves passing contaminated water through a porous bed of steel slag. The steel slag can be used to remove various contaminants or reduce the concentration of such contaminants, such as heavy metals (for example, hexavalent chromium), chlorinated organic compounds, and certain inorganic anions. The method preferably involves placing an underground barrier of a porous bed of steel slag in a flow path of contaminated groundwater then allowing contaminated groundwater to pass through the barrier to purify the contaminated groundwater. The slag particles may be used as produced with no further grinding necessary, although the slag may be passed through a sieve or sieves to obtain a set of slag particles having a median diameter of about &frac18; inch to 1 inch, and preferably between about &frac14; inch to &frac38; inch. Due to the inherent permeability of slag, no additive need be mixed with the slag. The method also contemplates periodically replacing the spent slag with fresh slag or placing another wall adjacent the first wall of slag.

Method for purifying contaminated groundwater using steel slag

A fault tolerant synchronous machine has a stator with a core containing a plurality of phase windings, a rotor supported for rotation within the core, and a non-magnetic sleeve affixed to the stator and disposed in the space between the stator and the rotor and having a plurality of slots extending parallel to the axis of the rotor and positioned to receive high permeability inserts for shunting the flux paths of faulty stator windings to permit low power operation of a synchronous machine having faulty stator windings.

In the embodiments described in the specification a metal heat transfer cold plate has two sets of parallel coolant passages extending between opposite end surfaces and non-metallic headers made of electrically insulating material are attached to the opposite ends of the metal plate. One of the headers provides an inlet to one set of coolant passages and an outlet from the other set of coolant passages and the other header provides fluid communication between the two sets of coolant passages. The headers are affixed to the cold plate by adhesive or by a snap-in connection having a sealing gasket between each header and the cold plate and the assembled cold plate and headers are insulatively supported by mounting feet attached to the electrically insulating headers.

In the propulsion arrangement for an axisymmetric vehicle described in the specification, four propulsion modules are removably mounted at the rear of a vehicle in symmetric disposition about the vehicle axis, each module having an inlet section at its forward end which draws in the vehicle hull boundary layer without separation from the vehicle hull and supplies it uniformly to a rotating blade section driven by a rim drive motor. Control vanes for the vehicle are mounted between adjacent pairs of propulsion modules.

Propulsion arrangement for axisymmetric fluid-borne vehicles

In the external electric drive propulsion module arrangement described in the specification, two parallel propulsion units are mounted in a housing affixed beneath the stern of a ship and having a surface contour conforming to the contour of the adjacent surface portions of the ship's hull. Each propulsion unit is disposed substantially horizontally to provide maximum propulsion efficiency and has a rotating blade section for driving water rearwardly from an inlet and a fixed blade section following the rotating blade section. The inlet receives water from a wraparound array of screened intake openings near the forward end of the module housing which draws in the surface boundary layer of the ship's hull. In addition, vertical vanes are affixed to the stern of the ship to straighten the flow of water from the propulsion units.

Integrated external electric drive propulsion module arrangement for surface ships

In the embodiments described in the specification, a SWATH vessel has a superstructure supported by strut members from a pair of pontoons and each pontoon has a propulsion module removably attached to the rear end of the pontoon. The propulsion module has a self contained propulsion system including a module body with a longitudinal water passage, a rim drive electric motor, a row of rotatable blades, and an inlet opening at the forward end of he cowl member which is arranged to draw in the boundary layer of water flowing along the pontoon to which the propulsion module is attached. Spaced vanes are provided at the inlet opening to block objects from being drawn into the longitudinal passage.

In the particular embodiments described in the specification, a controllable pitch propellor arrangement includes a plurality of propellor blades supported from a central hub which is rotatably mounted on a shaft in which each blade is pivotally supported from the central hub. Two radial pins extending from the outer ends of each of the blades are received in corresponding rims having peripherally disposed permanent magnet arrays. The rims are rotated to drive the propellor by energization of coils in a stator assembly surrounding the rims and the pitch of the blades is changed by changing the phase relationship of the current supplied to the stator coils to change the angular relation of the rims.
