An engine compartment of an automotive vehicle is provided. The compartment comprises an internal combustion engine including an air intake manifold and an electrical storage battery. The battery is housed in a storage box and an air intake system supplies air to the air intake manifold and the battery storage box. The air intake system has an inlet supplying air to a flow diverter. The flow diverter has a main channel including a bend dividing the main channel into a first passage and a second passage tangential to the first passage. The second passage is in fluid communication with the air intake manifold. The flow diverter includes an outlet facing the first passage which is in fluid communication with the battery storage box.

A wastegate control system and a method for the wastegate control system is disclosed. The wastegate control system includes an ambient pressure sensor, a throttle angle sensor, an ignition timing sensor, a knock sensor, an intake charge temperature sensor and an intake charge humidity sensor. A wastegate is controlled according to information received from these sensors.

A system for managing a temperature of a working fluid in a vehicle powertrain can include a temperature sensor and a controller. The working fluid can be located in a transmission of the powertrain, and a temperature sensor can be in thermal contact with the working fluid and configured to output data indicative of a real-time temperature of the working fluid. The controller can be in electrical communication with the temperature sensor and at least one of a power source and the transmission. The controller can be configured to compare the data from the temperature sensor to a temperature threshold, select a terminal speed limit when the data indicates that the temperature is less than or substantially equal to the temperature threshold, and select a reduced speed limit when the data indicates that the temperature is greater than the temperature threshold.

System and method for managing an operating temperature of a working fluid in a vehicle powertrain

A vehicle including a battery residing in a compartment having at least one vented wall. The vehicle further includes an at least partially hollow frame having an air inlet. A conduit extends between the frame and the battery box providing fluid communication therebetween.

A modified air dam includes an integral spring-like, corrugate-shaped portion for absorbing impact forces imposed on the air dam. A lower portion of the air dam is generally planar and angled slightly from a vertical plane toward the front of the vehicle. The air dam also includes a rounded portion to provide a horizontal offset between upper and lower portions of the air dam and to direct airflow toward a bottom portion of the radiator. The air dam may also be curved side-to-side or employ an inverted, generally U-shaped portion as a first force absorbing region and a spaced rib that serves as a second force absorbing region. The generally U-shaped portion also advantageously extends over a fastener and mounting region of the air dam.

An engine comprises an intake manifold, first and second cylinder banks, a turbocharger, a flow passage, and first and second cylinder banks. The first and second cylinder banks are each in fluid communication with a respective output of the intake manifold. The turbocharger is associated with the second cylinder bank and includes a compressor input port and a compressor output port. The flow passage is in fluid communication with each of the compressor output port and an input of the intake manifold.

An assembly for changing the pitch of fan blades rotatably attached to a hub includes a main drive shaft configured to rotate the hub. The main drive shaft is rotated by a first motor. A secondary drive shaft is coupled to the main drive shaft via a gearing system located within the hub. The secondary drive shaft is also driven by a second motor. When driven by the second motor, the secondary drive shaft manipulates the gearing system to alter the pitch of the fan blades.

A control system for a variable pitch radiator fan is disclosed. The control system is capable of varying the blade pitch of the radiator fan from a normal position to a full reverse position. The control system can change the blade pitch based on a number of factors, including vehicle speed. In systems with a plurality of fans, the control system is also capable of independently controlling the blade pitch of each of the fans. In systems with multiple fans, the control system can produce a circulation mode.

The system includes one or more sensors in the crankcase ventilation system. An air to fuel ratio sensor may be disposed within a breather line and/or a PCV line of the crankcase ventilation system to monitor crankcase gases.

A system to cool exhaust gas entering a catalytic converter in a turbocharged engine is disclosed. An air bypass valve is controlled to vent pressurized air to the atmosphere to overrev a turbocharger when exhaust gas exceeds a predetermined temperature. The rotation of the turbocharger increases to maintain a desired boost pressure. When this occurs, the turbocharger absorbs more energy from the exhaust gas to maintain the desired boost pressure. Thus, the exhaust gas entering the catalytic converter is cooled.

Turbocharged engine using an air bypass valve

A method of controlling a motor vehicle is disclosed. The method can be used to determine an ambient pressure value without the use of an ambient pressure sensor. The ambient pressure value can be used for controlling a set of fuel injectors. The method can include provisions for adjusting the ambient pressure value to correct for errors introduced by engine wear and other factors.
