A liquid flow metering system is disclosed which includes a pump disposed between a liquid supply and a reservoir. The reservoir includes an inlet connected to the pump, an air/liquid outlet and a liquid outlet. The air/liquid outlet is connected to an air separation chamber. The liquid outlet is connected to a flow meter and a liquid outlet valve. The air separation chamber is connected to an air outlet. The air outlet is connected to an air release valve. The air separation chamber accommodates an optical sensor for sensing the presence of air in front thereof and within the air separation chamber. The optical sensor, air release valve and liquid outlet valve are all linked to a controller. When the optical sensor senses air in front of the optical sensor, the sensor sends a signal to the controller to open the air release valve and close the liquid outlet valve. Conversely, when the optical sensor senses liquid in front of the optical sensor, the optical sensor sends a signal to the controller to close the air release valve and open the liquid outlet valve.

Disclosed herein is a one piece drive shaft housing comprising a casting including an outer surface having an upper end surface, a lower end surface, and an endless side surface extending between the upper and lower end surfaces, an internal cavity extending between the upper and lower end surfaces and adapted to receive a drive shaft and a clutch operated linkage, an internal exhaust gas passage extending between the upper and lower end surfaces and located in spaced relation to the cavity, an internal coolant supply passage extending between the upper and lower end surfaces, an internal idle exhaust passage including a series of expansion chambers and extending between the upper end surface and the endless side surface, and an internal coolant drainage passage extending between the upper and lower end surfaces in heat exchanging relation to the exhaust gas passage.

Disclosed herein is an air silencer comprising a main body including a first member including a first wall partially defining a first plenum area, a second wall partially defining a second plenum area, and a third wall connecting the first and second walls, a second member including a first wall which partially defines a plenum area cooperating with the first plenum area of the first member to define a first plenum chamber, a second wall which partially defines a plenum area cooperating with the second plenum area of the first member to define a second plenum chamber, and a third wall which connects the first and second walls of the second member and is located in spaced relation to the third wall of the first member to define therebetween a narrow passage between the first and second plenum chambers.

Disclosed herein is an outboard motor including a fore and aft center plane and comprising a powerhead assembly including a two stroke internal combustion engine including a cylinder block including a port side, a starboard side, a plurality of vertically aligned cylinders in a single bank, which cylinders each include an axis extending at an angle to said center plane and to one of said port and starboard sides, and an exhaust port on the other of said port and starboard sides, and an exhaust gas passage including a main portion extending vertically adjacent said center plane, and a like plurality of elbow portions connecting said exhaust ports to said main portion, which elbow portions include any one change in direction.

Disclosed herein is an outboard motor comprising a propulsion unit including a lower unit having port and starboard sides and comprising a drive shaft housing having an upper end, a power head including an engine fixedly attached to said upper end of said drive shaft housing, and an engine cover assembly comprising a starboard lower cover member extending downwardly to said lower end of said drive shaft housing and including an inwardly open recess, a port lower cover member extending downwardly to said lower end of said drive shaft housing and including an inwardly open recess, and means connecting together said port and starboard cover members independently of said lower unit and in surrounding covering relation to said drive shaft housing, and means resiliently supporting said lower cover members on said lower unit and including rubber mounts respectively extending from said port and starboard sides of said lower unit and into said inwardly open recesses of said lower cover members.

Outboard motor cover assembly

The two-cycle internal combustion engine includes an engine block having a cylindrical wall defining a cylinder having a head end, a piston mounted for reciprocative movement in the cylinder, and a passage in the engine block, such as an exhaust passage, a transfer passage, or a crankcase fuel intake passage, terminating at the cylinder wall in a port, such as an exhaust port, a transfer port or a piston-controlled, crankcase fuel intake port, having upper and lower edges. A valve mounted in the passage for movement relative to the port is operable to selectively vary the effective distance of one of the port edges from the cylinder head end and thereby provide the capability of varying the timing of the port opening and/or closing as required to obtain optimum engine performance at different operating conditions.

Disclosed herein is a pressure valve for use in any one of several cooling systems for different internal combustion engines also disclosed herein. The pressure valve is connected in series with a source of coolant and an engine coolant jacket for affording coolant flow from the source through the coolant jacket when the pressure in the coolant is above a first value and for affording continued coolant flow through the coolant jacket until the pressure in the coolant falls below a second value lower than the first value. The pressure valve comprises wall means defining a chamber having an inlet and an outlet including a valve seat, together with a valve member having a first surface movable relative to a closed position wherein the first surface sealingly engages the valve seat, which valve member also has a second surface facing away from the first surface. Means biasing the valve member toward the closed position are provided, together with a diaphragm having a portion connected to the valve member for proportionately related movement in common with the valve member, the diaphragm having a side surface positioned in spaced relation with respect to the second surface of the valve member so that liquid entering the inlet at a pressure above the first value is effective to displace the valve member from the closed position and so that the valve member remains displaced from the closed position until the pressure in the liquid entering the inlet falls below the second value.
