A bleed valve for an air plenum includes a valve body having a poppet seat, a poppet supported by the valve body and movable relative to the poppet seat, and piston slideable relative to the poppet and movable relative to the poppet between an extended position and a retracted position. Gas turbine engines and methods of bleeding fluid from gas turbine engines are also described.

Passive active poppet-type bleed valves

An air to air heat exchanger is provided including a core having a plurality of alternately stacked first layers and second layers. Each first layer includes a plurality of first modules having corrugated fins that define a plurality of first fluid flow paths. The first modules are aligned to fluidly couple the first fluid flow paths. Each second layer includes at least one second module having corrugated fins that define a plurality of second fluid flow paths. At least one second layer includes a third module having a plurality of corrugated fins that define a plurality of third fluid flow paths. The third module is arranged such that the third fluid flow paths are parallel to the second fluid flow paths. A number of corrugated fins formed in the third module is less than a number of corrugated fins formed in the second module.

Heat exchanger

A fuel pump arrangement including a housing and an impeller located within the housing configured for receiving cold fuel through an inlet of the housing, wherein the impeller includes a series of vanes for drawing fluid and a nose cone defining an axis, wherein the nose cone includes a channel therethrough for passing warm fuel to an exterior surface of the nose cone for mixing with the cold fuel.

Centrifugal fuel pump ice prevention

A sensor assembly includes a wear sensor and a seal member. The wear sensor has an encapsulation body with a wear face, a sacrificial conductor embedded within the encapsulation body and spaced apart from the wear face, and a monitoring lead extending into the encapsulation body and connected to the sacrificial conductor. The wear sensor is fixed relative to the seal member and the encapsulation body has a wear coefficient that is greater than a wear coefficient of the seal member. Bearing arrangements and methods of monitoring seal wear in bearing arrangements are also described.

Wear sensors for monitoring seal wear in bearing arrangements

A valve according to an example of the present disclosure includes a poppet head configured to move with respect to a valve outlet of the valve. A first spring is configured to be compressed with a force generated by fluid flow through the valve, and compression of the first spring allows the poppet head to move towards the valve outlet. A second spring is configured to allow the poppet head to move toward the valve outlet when compressed. A method for controlling fluid flow is also disclosed.

The bearing carrier including: a bearing body of a first material having a shaft-receiving aperture and a bridge land with a finger cut to channel fluid pressurized by intermeshing of gears rotatably supported by the bearing carrier into an outlet defined by a housing enveloping the bearing carrier, wherein the bearing body includes a bearing face configured to be in a facing spaced relationship with the gears, wherein the bearing face includes a second material integral with the first material, wherein at least one of the first material and the second material define a portion of the bearing face of the bearing body extending about the shaft-receiving aperture, the portion of the bearing face excluding the bridgeland.

Hybrid pump bearing for contamination resistance

Disclosed is a lubricant supply system for a plurality of bearing dampers in a plurality of engine bearing compartments of a gas turbine engine, including a lubricant supply conduit, a first lubricant delivery conduit fluidly coupled to the supply conduit, the first delivery conduit including one or more lubricant delivery flow paths and delivering lubrication to engine components, a second lubricant delivery conduit fluidly coupled to the supply conduit, the second delivery conduit delivering lubricant to one or more of the plurality of bearing dampers, and an active oil flow management valve, selectively restricting lubricant flow in the first delivery conduit, increasing pressure in the second delivery conduit, based on an engine shaft rotational speed.

Apparatus and method for providing fluid to a bearing damper

A bleed valve includes a valve housing defining an inlet and an outlet with a flow path for fluid communication from the inlet to the outlet. A poppet head is connected to the valve housing by a primary spring and a secondary spring. The poppet head is configured for movement relative to the valve housing between: a fully open position in which the poppet head is spaced apart from the inlet to allow flow through the flow path, with the primary spring and secondary spring both expanded; a partially closed position in which the poppet head is spaced apart from the inlet but is closer to the inlet than in the fully open position, with the primary spring compressed; and a fully closed position in which the poppet head seats against the valve housing blocking flow through the flow path, with the primary spring and the secondary spring both compressed.

Bleed valves

An engine fuel system is disclosed for managing drainage of fuel in response to an engine shut-down condition. For normal operation, a piston of a piston assembly is maintained in a first position by pressurized fuel in a volume on a first side of the piston. In response to engine shut-down, pressure is removed from the first side of the piston and fuel in the volume on the first side of the piston is drained into a return conduit that is part of the fuel system's thermal management system. Displacement of the piston in response to removal of pressure on the first side of the piston creates a volume on a second side of the piston for drainage of fuel from a fuel manifold.

Fuel drain system and method

According to one embodiment, an air turbine starter is provided. The air turbine starter comprising: a turbine wheel including a hub integrally attached to a turbine rotor shaft and a plurality of turbine blades extending radially outward from the hub; an inlet housing at least partially surrounding the turbine wheel; a nozzle located upstream from the turbine wheel and contained within the inlet housing defining an inlet flowpath between the nozzle and the inlet housing, the inlet flowpath directs air flow into the turbine blades; and a plurality of turbine vanes rotatably connected to the nozzle, each turbine vane extending radially from the nozzle into the inlet flowpath towards the inlet housing; wherein the plurality of turbine vanes are operable to adjust air flow through the inlet flowpath by rotating each turbine vane.

Air turbine starter with automated variable inlet vanes

A seal housing with fluid regulating capability is provided for use with an outlet. The seal housing includes a seal element, a fitting and a valve. The seal element includes an angled flange that is fittable to the outlet and a seal element body from which the angled flange extends. The seal element body defines a bore extending between opposite open ends of the body and receptive of fluid from the outlet. The fitting is configured to tightly engage with the outlet and to urge the angled flange against the outlet with increasing pressure as fitting-outlet engagement proceeds. A valve is constrained within the bore and configured to regulate a flow of the fluid, which is received from the outlet, through the bore.

Seal with integrated fluid regulating device

A solenoid includes a coil defining an axis, an armature disposed radially inward of the coil, and a plurality of linear guides disposed at least partially between a radially inward facing surface of the coil and a radially outward facing surface of the armature. Each of the linear guides has a frictional surface area, with a dimension of the frictional surface area aligned with the axis being larger than a dimension of the frictional surface area aligned with a circumference of the coil.

An exhaust nozzle for a turbine engine includes multiple daisy style corrugations arranged circumferentially about the exhaust nozzle. Each of the daisy style corrugations has a radially inner base portion and multiple lobes protruding radially outward from the base portion.

Exhaust stream mixer

An example arrangement for cooling a gas turbine engine includes an air turbine starter, a starter air valve, and an airflow adjustment device. The air turbine starter includes a turbine section for rotationally driving a compressor of a gas turbine engine through rotation of a shaft that connects the turbine section to the compressor. The starter air valve is configured to control a flow of pressurized air along a flow path from a source to turbine blades of the turbine section. The starter air valve includes a manual override feature that allows manual opening of the starter air valve. The airflow adjustment device is configured to adjust the flow of pressurized air along the flow path when the manual override feature is engaged based on a rotational speed of one of the shaft and an additional shaft that is driven by the compressor.
