A sport shoe having an upper, a sole having at least an outer sole having a mobile portion at least at the heel portion of the sole which is pivotable about a lateral axis forward of the heel portion. A midsole insert member is insertable between the mobile portion and the upper. The mobile portion includes upper engaging projections cooperating with the upper to prevent the midsole insert from moving laterally relative to the upper when the midsole insert member is introduced between the mobile portion and the upper.

A sole member for an article of footwear, comprises a sheet of resilient material displaying cushioning and memory properties. The sheet has a generally longitudinal cavity with outwardly flared sidewalls that deflect horizontally in the presence of a downward force. The cavity is wider in the heel region and curves outwardly toward the lateral forefoot to create a path of least resistance that causes the center of mass of the human body to migrate laterally and thereby reduce predisposition to excessive pronation.

A sole for an article of footwear, such as an athletic shoe, comprises a mass of sole-forming material having provided therein a block of material functioning harmoniously with the remaining mass of material and providing a receptacle in the sole; and a user-selectable, removable insert fitted in the receptacle to impart desired energy characteristics to the sole. The insert can be selected by the user according to his particular needs.

This invention is a toy in which two principal assemblies of parts are made to counter-rotate by a concentric internal coil spring, previously wound up by hand, whose tension is maintained by a one-way clutch and is released when the weight of the toy, when it is placed on a flat surface, disengages the clutch. A carrying handle, in the form of a miniature fence of posts and railings, is attached to the upper assembly. A mechanism is incorporated to free the inner end of the spring from its arbor when the energy of the spring is spent, so that the assemblies may continue to counter-rotate by inertia without damage to the spring. The toy is equipped with a lighting system of flashing light-bulbs around the perimeter and in a central transparent cupola, supplied with energy from flashlight-type electrical batteries in a central tubular shaft through a switch on the upper assembly. A tricycle supporting gear supports and stabilizes the toy when in operation, consisting of three hollow spheres on radial axles in the base, or of three hollow hemispheres on the lower face of an annular plate attached to the base of the lower assembly. All parts except light bulbs, batteries, wiring, contact parts, switch, and parts necessarily made of metal such as springs, axles, a ring carrying a hook to engage the inner end of the driving spring, and bolts for assembly, may be made of impact-resistant synthetic insulating plastic material by injection-molding or other appropriate process. External parts are covered with paint to resemble glittering metal, and illumination holes in the rim of the upper assembly are covered with thin tinted transparent plastic film.

Spinning toy

A device for measuring the oil or fluid level in engine sumps or other containers is known to consist of a removable dipstick marked with a scale and equipped with an extraction handle, riding freely longitudinally in a tube leading to the outside, so that the oil or fluid level may be read on the scale when the dipstick is extracted. In this invention, the dipstick is self-retracting, being the outer end of a coil spring of suitable length and tension, its outer end straightened for a suitable length, marked with a scale, led outside through the tube, and equipped with a handle which may be detachable for disassembly, the inner end of the coil secured to an arbor, such arbor immobilized between guide plates or discs, the spring being free to tighten around the arbor when the straight portion is extracted, but exerting sufficient tension to expand and retract the straight portion when the extraction tension is removed. Alternatively, the measuring part may be a measuring blade of suitable dimensions linked for flexibility to the outer end of the coil spring, or the straight portion may be reinforced with a metal strip along its length. The straight portion or measuring blade passes freely through the tube between two wiping pads of felt or other suitable material, one fixed, the other movable by external pressure through an aperture in the tube, pressure being applied to the movable pad when required to compress the straight portion or blade against the fixed pad to clean it of oil or fluid while it is being extracted, a light spring returning the movable pad to its original position when the external pressure is removed, with sufficient clearance so that the straight part or blade will not again be wiped when retracted and re-extracted to show on the scale the oil or fluid level inside the sump or container.
