A flow through pressure regulator apparatus and method for directing a flow of fuel within a fuel system. Present invention includes a lower housing having a fuel inlet where fuel flows through the fuel inlet and communicates with a valve biasing member through a fuel chamber and lower valve element with fuel passages. The valve biasing member permits or inhibits fuel flow through a fuel chamber by opening and closing a ceramic valve element. The valve biasing member comprises a flat disk having at least two reticulated concentric rings coupled by at least one bridge. The fuel flows past an open valve element through the lower valve element fuel passages to the valve biasing member. The valve biasing member then diffuses the flow of fuel. A fuel cover directs the flow of fuel from the valve biasing member to the fuel outlet.

An intake manifold ( ) includes a fuel rail cavity ( ) which receives a metallic fuel rail ( ) enclosed by a molded fuel rail cavity cover ( ). The fuel rail ( ) communicates with each of a plurality of engine cylinders ( ) through a fuel module ( ). An injector cup ( ) fits upon each module cylinder to provide an interface between the fuel module and the fuel rail. Steel fuel rails are provided with the mechanical components of a plurality of fuel injector valve bodies. The electronics for operating those valves are molded into an injector pack. The valve bodies are inserted into the passages associated with the injector pack such that the electronics are part of a single molded plastic portion. A corrugated seal is sealed to an outer portion of the passage on the injector pack. Thus, the present invention eliminates the number of connections for supplying fuel that needed to be sealed in the prior art. Further, the number of required assembly steps is reduced over the prior art.

Modular fuel injection pack

A fuel system has a fuel injector directly mounted with a fuel rail. The fuel rail has a body with interior and exterior surfaces. The interior surface defines a volume. The exterior surface surrounds the interior surface. An aperture extends between the interior and exterior surfaces in fluid communication with the volume. The fuel injector has an inlet tube with an inside surface that defines a flow path through a portion of the fuel injector, and an outside surface that surrounds the inside surface. The fuel injector is disposed so that the flow path is in fluid communication with the volume. A rigid connection is disposed between at least one of the interior and exterior surfaces of the fuel rail and the outside surface of the inlet tube, the rigid connection securing and hermetically sealing the fuel rail with the fuel injector.

Fuel system including a fuel injector directly mounted to a fuel rail

A fuel system has a fuel injector directly mounted with a fuel rail. The fuel rail includes a first portion and a second portion that form a body. The body has an interior surface defining a volume, an exterior surface surrounding the interior surface, and at least one aperture disposed between the interior and exterior surfaces in fluid communication with the volume. The at least one fuel injector has an inlet tube with an inside surface defining a flow path through a portion of the fuel injector and an outside surface surrounding the inside surface. The fuel injector is disposed such that the flow path is in fluid communication with the volume. A rigid connection is disposed between the interior surface of the fuel rail and at least one of the outside surface and the inside surface of the inlet tube. The rigid connection secures and hermetically seals the fuel rail with the at least one fuel injector.

An integrated fuel rail portion and mounting bracket assembly is provided. The assembly includes an elongated support portion and at least one mounting bracket integrally connected to the elongated support portion. A method of forming the assembly is also provided.

Stamped fuel rail with integrated mounting brackets

A fuel rail for a fuel injection system is disclosed. The fuel rail includes a first portion including a generally elongated base, at least one mounting bracket and a plurality of fuel cup openings in the generally elongated base. The fuel rail also comprises a second, generally U-shaped, portion having a first and second opposing sides. Each of the first and second opposing sides are sealingly connected to the generally elongated base with a laser weld. The second portion also has a supply end having a fuel supply opening, and a closed end, distal from the supply end. The closed end and the supply end are sealingly connected to the generally elongated base with a laser weld. A method of manufacturing the fuel rail is also disclosed.

Laser welded fuel rail and process of making same

A fuel system is provided for supplying a second fuel different from a first supplied fuel substantially simultaneously to a plurality of injectors. In one form, an inner tube within an outer housing has a plurality of openings spaced from inlets to the fuel injectors for supplying the second fuel substantially simultaneously to each of the injectors, the number of outlets being less than the number of inlets. In a second form, the inner tube within the housing has a plurality of differently sized orifices increasing in size with increasing distance relative to the fuel inlet to the inner tube for supplying fuel substantially simultaneously to fuel injectors in registration with the orifices. In a further form, multiple inner tubes are used. In a fourth form, the main fuel supply line is divided and sub-divided through a series of T's or Y's to generate one fuel passage of equal length for each injector whereby upon changeover from the first fuel to the second fuel different from the first fuel, the second fuel is supplied substantially simultaneously to all injectors.
