Various avionics systems may benefit from appropriate integration of distance measurement equipment, traffic collision avoidance systems, and transponders, with the distance measurement equipment using a dedicated antenna. A system can include a transponder processor. The system can also include a top antenna receiver configured to connect to a top antenna. The transponder processor can be configured to communicate using the top antenna. The system can also include a bottom antenna receiver configured to connect to a first bottom antenna, wherein the transponder processor is configured to communicate using the first bottom antenna. The system can further include a distance measure equipment processor integrated with the transponder processor and configured to measure distance using a second bottom antenna.

Systems and methods for providing an integrated TCAS, transponder, and DME system using a dedicated DME antenna

Various communication systems may benefit from enhanced reception methods. For example, various transponders and surveillance systems may benefit from reception methods that can distinguish between overlapping pulses from multiple sources. A method can include receiving, at an antenna, a first series of pulses from a first source. The method can also include receiving, at the antenna, a second series of pulses from a second source. The first series and the second series can at least partially overlap each other. The method can further include de-interleaving the first series from the second series using at least one non-time-domain technique.

Systems and methods for enhanced reception

A distributed antenna system of an aircraft includes first and second antennas and corresponding first and second remote transceiver units (RTUs). Each RTU receives a radio signal from the corresponding antenna and includes a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)/digital signal processor (DSP). The FPGA/DSP of a second RTU receives a second signal corresponding to the radio signal from the second antenna and receives a first signal from the first RTU corresponding to the radio signal from the first antenna. The FPGA/DSP of a second RTU determines which of the first and second antennae will transmit a reply to an interrogation included in the radio signals from the first and second antennae, based on a comparison of the first signal and the second signal.

Systems and methods for providing processing diversity transponder signals with distributed electronics

Various communication systems may benefit from suitable use of redundancy. For example, surveillance systems in avionics applications may benefit from having functional redundancy. A system can include a collision avoidance or alerting system function in wired connection to a directional antenna. The system can also include a first mode-S transponder function in wired connection to the directional antenna. The system can further include a second mode-S transponder function in wired connection to the directional antenna, wherein the first mode-S transponder function is independent from the second mode-S transponder function.

Surveillance systems providing integrated functional redundancy

Various wireless systems may benefit from suitable sharing of antennas and related equipment. For example a various avionics systems may benefit from systems and methods for providing a distance measurement equipment L-band shared antenna. Circuitry can include an interface to a bottom omni-directional antenna. The circuitry can also include a radio frequency splitter in switchable communication with the interface to the bottom omni-directional antenna. The circuitry can further include an interface between the radio frequency splitter and a distance measurement equipment receiver. The circuitry can additionally include an interface between the radio frequency splitter and a surveillance receiver.

Systems and methods for providing a DME L-band shared antenna

There is provided an avionics system that provides several avionics functions within a single LRU. In one embodiment, the system comprises a software-configurable RF assembly, one or more processor assemblies that are configured to provide multiple TAWS/TCAS/Mode S/ADS-B/ATC functions, interfaces to allow connections to aircraft electronics and data loaders, and multipurpose antennas. In one embodiment, a common processor architecture allows generic avionics processors to be configured to operate a number of TAWS/TCAS/Mode S/ADS-B/ATC functions without the need for multiple LRUs, and software-defined RF functions allow RF circuitry that interfaces to the processors to handle current and future communication needs.

Systems and methods can provide alternatives to a global positioning system (GPS). For example, certain systems can operate on 1090 MHz and provide for methods of estimating location that can be used in place of GPS. Thus, a method can include obtaining an estimate of position of an own aircraft based on time of arrival of signals from a plurality of ground stations. The calculation of the estimate can be performed in the own aircraft. The method can also include using the estimate of position instead of a position from a global positioning system.

Systems and methods for providing GPS alternatives on 1090 MHz

An Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system, and method of harmonizing a transponder Squawk code and an ADS-B system, ensures that a Squawk code broadcast by the ADS-B system matches the transponder Squawk code. The transponder Squawk code is transmitted from a transponder positioned onboard an aircraft, and the transmitted transponder Squawk code is received by a device positioned onboard the aircraft in which the transponder is installed. The ADS-B system is updated with the received transmitter squawk code. The squawk code is transmitted using the ADS-B system.

Harmonizing code from independent airborne aircraft identification systems

An Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system, and method of harmonizing a transponder Squawk code and an ADS-B system, ensures that a Squawk code broadcast by the ADS-B system matches the transponder Squawk code. The transponder Squawk code is transmitted from a transponder positioned onboard an aircraft and the transmitted transponder Squawk code with a device positioned onboard the aircraft. A Squawk code input of an ADS-B Squawk code to be transmitted with the ADS-B system is received. The ADS-B Squawk code is compared with the received transmitter Squawk code using a comparator and the pilot is informed whether the transmitter Squawk code matches the ADS-B Squawk code. A message formatter generates a message that includes the ADS-B Squawk code. A wireless transmitter broadcasts the ADS-B Squawk code generated by the message formatter.

A system is delineated comprising a TCAS receiver having one or more filters, one or more amplifiers and one or more A/D converters, the one or more A/D converters for digitizing analog data into digital data for decoding one or more of an ADS-B message and a TIS-B message; and circuitry for receiving the digital data and decoding the one or more of an ADS-B message and a TIS-B message, wherein the circuitry includes two or more paths for the decoding.

Method and apparatus to improve the ability to decode ADS-B squitters through multiple processing paths

A display system is disclosed for displaying air traffic symbology from a plurality of different types of air traffic surveillance systems on a single monitor. A display device includes a processor for generating display symbology from TCAS, SKE and ADS-B information, and a monitor for displaying the generated symbology in a uniform format.

Formation surveillance and collision avoidance

Integrated surveillance display

A formation collision avoidance system includes a Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) having a passive mode and an active mode. The passive mode enables several members of an aircraft formation to fly without actively interrogating using TCAS while only one or few formation members are actively interrogating. Formation members in passive mode maintain awareness of current air and ground traffic conditions using networked surveillance information provided over a communications link between formation members in active mode and formation members in passive mode. The networked surveillance information includes positional and intent information of current air/ground traffic obtained from ADS-B broadcasts and replies to the actively interrogating members of the formation. The communications link utilizes Station Keeping Equipment (SKE) already existing on certain aircraft.

A high power radio frequency(RF) precision step attenuator includes a trim attenuator, a multi-step attenuator and a calibration/control circuit. The control circuit includes a memory for storing attenuator specific calibration data. The calibration data incorporates attenuator characteristics which are used by the control circuit to adjust the attenuator and compensate for manufacturing variances, temperature variations, and the like.
