A visible light source includes a substrate, a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser including an active semiconductor region configured to emit infrared light and a first reflector configured to reflect the infrared light emitted by the active semiconductor region, a second reflector configured to reflect the infrared light and form a vertical cavity for the infrared light with the first reflector, and one or more micro-resonators configured to receive the infrared light and generate visible light in one or more colors using the infrared light through optical parametric oscillation. The visible light source also includes one or more output couplers configured to couple the visible light in one or more colors from the one or more micro-resonators into free space or into a photonic integrated circuit.

A visible light source includes a substrate, a first reflector and a second reflector configured to reflect infrared light and arranged vertically to form a vertical cavity on the substrate, an active region in the vertical cavity and configured to emit infrared light, a micro-resonator on the substrate and configured to receive the infrared light emitted by the active region and generate visible light through optical parametric oscillation, and an output coupler configured to couple the visible light generated in the micro-resonator out of the micro-resonator.

Visible light source including integrated VCSELs and integrated photonic cavities

A GaN layer of micro-LEDs is exposed to ion implantation to amorphize one or more regions of the GaN layer. As a result, the GaN layer through which light rays propagate have non-uniform refractive indexes that modify propagation paths of some light rays. Ions are implanted in a region overlapping an active region that emits light to function as a converging GRIN (gradient-index) lens. The ion implanted regions collimate light rays that propagate along predetermined directions. As such, the light extraction from and the focus of the micro-LEDs is increased.

Grin lens structure in micro-LED devices

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a high performance backlight device with photonic integrated circuits. The backlight device includes a light source assembly, a multi-mode slab waveguide, and an out-coupling assembly. The light source assembly includes one or more light sources that generate light in accordance with emission instructions, and a de-speckling mechanism that conditions the generated light to mitigate speckle. The multi-mode slab waveguide in-couples the conditioned light and expands the in-coupled conditioned light in two dimensions to form a homogenous area of conditioned light within a region of the multi-mode slab waveguide. The out-coupling assembly out-couples the conditioned light from the region in a direction normal to the two dimensions, wherein a light modulation layer forms an image from the out-coupled conditioned light.

High performance backlight device using photonic integrated circuits

In some examples, an apparatus may include a backlight unit (BLU) including an electronic integrated circuit layer, a photonic integrated circuit layer, a color conversion module, and a display interface layer. In some examples, a BLU may include at least one laser or may be configured to receive laser light from at least one external laser source. Laser light may be transmitted towards a portion of the display interface layer using the photonic integrated circuit. Color conversion modules may be used to convert the laser light into one or more desired colors. Example apparatus may be used in head-mounted devices such as augmented reality and/or virtual reality devices. Other devices, methods, systems, and computer-readable media are also disclosed.

A display device includes a display panel having a first emission region and one or more second emission regions disposed adjacent to the first emission region. The display device includes a plurality of light emitters, arranged in the first emission region, corresponding to a first color gamut and a plurality of light emitters, arranged in the one or more second emission regions, corresponding to a second color gamut that is distinct from the first color gamut. A method for making a display device with a plurality of light emitters corresponding to a first color gamut in a first emission region and a plurality of light emitters corresponding to a second color gamut in a second emission region is also described.

Color foveated display devices and methods of making the same

A display device includes a display panel including a first array of light emitters having a first spacing in a first emission region of the display panel and a second array of light emitters having a second spacing in a second emission region of the display panel. The second spacing is distinct from the first spacing. The display device includes an optical filter including a first filter region and a second filter region. The first filter region changes distribution of first light from the first array of light emitters impinging on the first filter region so that the first light has a first distribution after passing through the first filter region. The second filter region changes distribution of second light from the second array of light emitters impinging on the second filter region so that the second light has a second distribution after passing through the second filter region.

Display devices and methods for processing light

LED apparatuses and corresponding manufacturing techniques are described. In some examples, an LED apparatus includes a mesa etched from a layered epitaxial structure. The layered epitaxial structure includes a quantum well layer and a barrier layer adjacent to the quantum well layer. The barrier layer overhangs the quantum well layer as a result of the quantum well layer having been etched to a greater depth compared to the barrier layer. In some examples, the quantum well layer and the barrier layer are etched together to produce an area where the barrier layer overhangs the quantum well layer. Etching of the quantum well layer and the barrier layer can be performed after the layered epitaxial structure has been etched to form the mesa, in order to reduce surface imperfections leftover from the mesa etch. In some examples, one or more regrowth semiconductor layers are formed over etched facets of the mesa.

In situ selective etching and selective regrowth of epitaxial layer for surface recombination velocity reduction in light emitting diodes

A light source based on an optical frequency mixer is disclosed. The light source has a first laser for emitting light at a first optical frequency, and a plurality of second lasers for emitting light at different second optical frequencies. The optical frequency mixer provides output light beams at mixed optical frequencies of the first and second lasers. Wavelength of output light beams may be tuned by tuning wavelength of any of the first or second lasers. In this manner, RGB wavelength-tunable light sources may be constructed based on red or near-infrared lasers. The wavelength tunability of the output light beams may be used to angularly scan or refocus the light beams.

Light source with optical frequency mixing

A display device includes an optical assembly and a display that includes a front surface and a back surface. The display is configured to output image light from the front surface and transmit ambient light from the back surface to the front surface. The optical assembly includes a substrate that has a substantially uniform thickness, a beam splitter, and a reflector. The optical assembly is configured to receive the image light output from the front surface of the display and to transmit a portion of the image light at a first non-zero optical power via an optical path that includes reflections at the reflector and at the beam splitter. The optical assembly is also configured to transmit a portion of the ambient light through the optical assembly at a second optical power without reflection at the reflector. The second optical power is less than the first optical power.

In various embodiments, an apparatus comprises a composite backplane that modulates light from a light source, where the composite backplane comprises an electronics layer disposed on a substrate, a photonics integrated circuit (IC) layer disposed on the electronics layer that causes light from the light source to propagate in a first direction, and an active light modulation (ALM) interface layer disposed on the photonics IC layer controls an ALM interface layer in order to control the light propagating in the first direction.

The disclosed projector device may include (1) a first monochromatic emitter array having a plurality of emitters of a first color disposed in a two-dimensional configuration and (2) a second monochromatic emitter array having a plurality of emitters of a second color disposed in a two-dimensional configuration. A display device includes a display panel having a first emission region and a second emission region that surrounds the first emission region. The display device includes a first plurality of light emitters arranged in the first emission region, a plurality of activation lines for the first emission region, a second plurality of light emitters arranged in the second emission region, and a plurality of activation lines for the second emission region. A single activation line of the plurality of activation lines for the first emission region is electrically coupled with a first number of light emitters in the first emission region and a single activation line of the plurality of activation lines for the second emission region is electrically coupled with a second number, distinct from the first number, of light emitters in the second emission region.

Display devices and methods of making the same

Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to light emitting diodes LEDs and methods of manufacturing the LEDs. The LEDs include a mesa-structure that improves light extraction of the LEDs. Furthermore, the process for forming the LEDs refrains from using physical etching to a quantum well active region of the LEDs to prevent compromising performance at the quantum well sidewall.
