A compressed natural gas fuel injector including a housing, an inlet, an outlet, a seat, a closure member, and an attached nozzle. In a preferred embodiment, the inlet and outlet communicate a flow of gaseous fuel regulated by the closure member. The gaseous fuel passes through the seat, which is coupled to a rim surface of a retainer portion of the attached nozzle, and into a flow passage that further communicates the flow of gaseous fuel into one or more flow channels. The orientation of the flow channels within the attached nozzle greatly affects the discharge pattern and mixing characteristics of the gaseous fuel within an intake manifold. A method of flowing gaseous fuel through the fuel injector is also described.

An intake manifold system including an intake manifold and a compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel injector located between an inlet and an outlet of the intake manifold. The CNG fuel injector includes a housing, an inlet, an outlet, a seat, a closure member, and a nozzle. In a preferred embodiment, the inlet and outlet communicate a flow of gaseous fuel regulated by the closure member. The gaseous fuel passes through the seat, which is secured to a rim surface of a retainer portion of the nozzle, and into a flow passage that further communicates the flow of gaseous fuel into one or more flow channels. The valve group subassembly includes a tube assembly having a longitudinal axis that extends between a first end and a second end; a seat that is secured at the second end of the tube assembly and that defines an opening; an armature assembly that is disposed within the tube assembly; a member that biases the armature assembly toward the seat; an adjusting tube that is disposed in the tube assembly and that engages the member for adjusting a biasing force of the member; a filter that is at least within the tube assembly; and a first attachment portion. The coil group subassembly includes a solenoid coil that is operable to displace the armature assembly with respect to the seat; and a second attachment portion that is fixedly connected to the first attachment portion.

A method for making a valve assembly is disclosed. The method includes providing a first work piece having a longitudinal axis and a first end and providing a second work piece having a surface. The method also includes disposing the first work piece and the second work piece axially between a pair of aligned elements that are relatively movable toward and away from each other along the longitudinal axis of the first work piece. Additionally, the method includes relatively moving the pair of aligned elements toward each other to axially clamp the first work piece and the second work piece and actuating the pair of aligned elements and delivering to the first work piece and the second work piece a controlled clamping force that acts to coin a zone of surface contact between the first end and the surface. Further, the method includes repeating the actuating of the pair of elements a plurality of times. An apparatus used to perform the method is also disclosed.

A fuel injector having a fuel flow rate set by injector stroke is disclosed. The fuel injector includes a housing having a hollow passage and a seat disposed at one end of the hollow passage. A needle is slidably mounted in the hollow passage. The needle is operable between a first position wherein the needle engages the seat and a second position wherein the needle is disposed away from the seat. A first flow area is formed by a minimum frusto-conical area between the seat and the needle when the needle is disposed away from the seat. The fuel injector also includes an opening at the one end of the hollow passage proximate to the seat. The opening has a second flow area larger than the first flow area. A method for setting a gaseous fuel injector flow rate with injector stroke is also disclosed.

The fuel injector includes a body having an inlet portion, an outlet portion, and a neck portion disposed between the inlet portion and the outlet portion. An adjusting tube is disposed within the neck portion of the body. A spring is disposed within the neck portion of the body, the spring having an upstream end proximate to the adjusting tube and a downstream end opposite the upstream end. A filter assembly is disposed within the tube assembly to provide a reaction member for the spring. An armature having a lower portion is disposed within the neck portion of the body and displaceable along the axis relative to the body. The downstream end of the spring is disposed proximate to the armature, the spring applying a biasing force to the armature. A valve seal is substantially rigidly connected to the lower portion of the armature. The fuel injector includes a modular valve group subassembly that is connected to a modular coil group subassembly.

A valve seat and a needle for a fuel injector are disclosed. The fuel injector includes a longitudinal axis extending therethrough, the valve seat, and the needle. The valve seat includes a channel having a channel wall extending along the longitudinal axis and a needle contact area upstream from the channel. The needle contact area is proximate to the channel such that fuel deposits form exclusively on the channel wall and on the valve seat upstream of the needle contact area. The needle includes a generally tubular perimeter, a downstream end, and a generally circular recess in the downstream end. The generally circular recess has a center generally along the longitudinal axis and an outer recess perimeter. The outer recess perimeter is proximate to the generally tubular perimeter such that fuel deposits form exclusively in the generally circular recess. A method of forming fuel deposits on the injector is also disclosed.
