A thulium doped silicate glass composition which contains SiO, AlO, and LaOemits visible and UV light when excited by infrared light. The glass composition may also contain GeOand ErO. When excited by infrared light of about 1060 nm, the glass emits visible light at fluorescent transitions of the Tmions with major broad features at 365, 455, 472, 651, and 791 nm.

Silicate glass for upconversion fluorescence

A co-doped silicate optical waveguide having a core including silica, and oxides of aluminum, germanium, erbium and thulium. The composition concentrations are: Er from 15 ppm to 3000 ppm; Al from 0.5 mol % to 12 mol %; Tm from 15 ppm to 10000 ppm; and Ge from 1 mol % to 20 mol %. In a specific embodiment, the concentration of Er is from 150 ppm to 1500 ppm; Al is from 2 mol % to 8 mol %; and Tm is from 15 ppm to 3000 ppm. A boron-less cladding surrounds the core.

Emission silicate waveguide compositions for enhanced L-band and S-band emission

A fusion splice including a first optical fiber having a first MFD and a first MFD expansion rate. The splice further includes a second fiber having a second MFD and a second MFD expansion rate, wherein the second MFD is lower than the first MFD. The second fiber comprises a core, a cladding radially surrounding the core, and a zone of high-concentration of fluorine between the core and the cladding. The rate of MFD expansion of the first fiber is less than the rate of MFD expansion of the second fiber during the fusion splicing operation.

Optical fiber fusion splice having a controlled mode field diameter expansion match

An optical waveguide including a core having silica, Al, a non-fluorescent rare-earth ion, Ge, Er, and Tm. The non-fluorescent rare-earth ion may be La. Exemplary compositions concentrations are Er is from 15 ppm to 3000 ppm, Al is from 0.5 mol % to 12 mol %, La is less than or equal to 2 mol %, Tm is from 15 ppm to 10,000 ppm; and the Ge is less than or equal to 15 mol %. The core may further include F. An exemplary concentration of F is less than or equal to 6 anion mol %.

Silicate waveguide compositions for extended L-band and S-band amplification

An optical article including a core; at least one cladding layer; and a narrow fluorine reservoir between the core and the cladding layer. The fluorine reservoir has a higher concentration of fluorine than either the cladding layer or the core. One particular embodiment includes a core including a halide-doped silicate glass that comprises approximately the following in cation-plus-halide mole percent 0.25-5 mol % Al O , 0.05-1.5 mol % La O , 0.0005-0.75 mol % Er O , 0.5-6 mol % F, 0-1 mol % Cl.

Optical waveguide article including a fluorine-containing zone

A coated optical fiber adjusted to operate at a predetermined temperature range. The coated fiber includes an optical fiber, a first polymer coating generally concentrically surrounding the optical fiber and a second polymer coating generally concentrically surrounding the first polymer coating, wherein the first polymer coating includes substantially no coefficient of thermal expansion stresses when the optical fiber is placed at a lower end of the temperature range.

Temperature range adjusted coated optical fibers

A method for manufacturing a coated optical fiber including the step of determining a desired temperature operating range of a coated optical fiber having at least one critical limit. The intercoating delamination stresses at the critical limit of said temperature range are determined. A zero-stress temperature region using the critical limit and the delamination stresses is then selected. An optical fiber is provided and the optical fiber is coated with a first polymer coating. The first polymer coating is exposed to a source of actinic radiation, wherein the source of actinic radiation generates heat. A second polymer coating including a photopolymerizable composition is applied to the optical fiber directly on the first polymer coating. The second polymer coating is cured, where at the time the second polymer coating is cured the first polymer coating is at the zero-stress temperature region.

Method of manufacturing temperature range adjusted coated optical fibers

Silica tubes and sleeves are used to protect fusion splices between the ends of the fiber coil and polarizing fibers. Use of silica for most of the subassembly components matches the coefficients of thermal expansion of the subassembly to that of the fiber coil, and also allows the coil to be annealed at extremely high temperatures. Annealing yields fiber coils of lowered birefringence, particularly when used with spun fibers. Ferrules are used to adjust the angular orientation of the fibers with respect to their planes of polarization.

Method of annealing a fiber within a coiled tube to thereby make a fiber

A holder for annealing a fiber optic coil uses a silica ring on a silica substrate, or silica tubular coil, either of which may be directly incorporated into a coil subassembly for a Faraday-effect current sensor. The ring may be formed in a silica plate by sandblasting or grinding, or formed separately and adhered to the plate. In the tubular holder embodiment, silica tubes and sleeves are used to protect fusion splices between the ends of the fiber coil and polarizing fibers. Holder for annealing fiber optic coils

A single-mode, single-polarization optical fiber ('PZ fiber') can have a large single-polarization wavelength bandwidth when .eta. (as herein defined) for one symmetry axis is positive when calculated from the refractive index profile determined with one of two orthogonal orientations of polarized light and is negative when calculated from the refractive index profile determined with the other orientation, and for each other symmetry axis of the novel optical fiber .eta. is positive for both orientations of plane polarized light. Preferably the absolute values for .eta. when positive and .eta. when negative are about equal for said one symmetry axis. A preferred PZ fiber can be formed by depositing siliceous layers onto the interior surface of a hollow substrate tube of quartz to provide a preform. After forming two parallel flat faces in its outer surface, the preform is pulled to form a PZ fiber having an ellipitcal stress-applying region.

Single-mode, single-polarization optical fiber

A single-mode, polarization-maintaining optical fiber has both excellent signal attenuation and resistance to adverse bending effects because (1) its cladding and any portion of the jacket that is within five times the radius of the mode-field in its core have a substantially uniform index of refraction that is at least 0.005 less than that of pure silica, and (2) the index of refraction of the core is at least as great as, but preferably not substantially greater than, that of pure silica. Preferably, the stress-applying region of the fiber is elliptical, and the jacket is pure silica.

Polarization-maintaining optical fiber

A connector for an optical fiber cable is disclosed wherein strain relief features are provided for minimizing strain applied either to the external jacket of the cable or to the fiber such as during connecting operations is prevented from being coupled to the optical fiber. The connector thus includes strain relief members for securely anchoring the outer jacket of the cable and for anchoring strain relief fibers contained within the cable. Also, a resilient member is provided for allowing limited rearward movement of a member within which the optical fiber is anchored such as may occur during connection.
