A voltage regulator circuit having an internally compensated effective series resistance includes a control circuit to generate an out current at a regulated output voltage based on a reference voltage. The control circuit includes an amplifier, a resistive element to feedback output voltage to an input of the amplifier, and a compensation circuit to couple the internally compensated effective series resistance into the control circuit. The compensation circuit includes a first current sense device to generate a first sensed current proportional to a current through an N-type pass device, a second current sense device arranged to generate a second sensed current proportional to the current through the N-type pass device, and a bias circuit coupled to sink the first sensed current and the second sensed current to reduce a bias voltage across the resistive element below a threshold voltage.

Low dropout linear regulator with internally compensated effective series resistance

AC-coupled equivalent series resistance (ESR) is introduced into a control circuit to provide additional stability in the feedback control loop. A sub-circuit emulates the effect of a higher value ESR in the output capacitor. The additional ESR in the feedback control loop inserts a zero into the transfer function that describes the circuit response at a desired frequency. The added zero compensates for the effects of unwanted or unavoidable poles in the transfer function, allowing for a greater range of input signal frequencies.

AC-coupled equivalent series resistance

A switched current steering device includes a switch activation unit coupled to a set of actual switches and an associated set of dummy switches. Based upon current actual switch states, next actual switch states as specified by a data stream, and current dummy switch states, the switch activation unit selectively generates dummy signals that indicate or specify next dummy switch states. The switch activation unit generates the dummy signals such that the total number of actual switches and dummy switches experiencing state transitions remains constant from one switching cycle to another.
