A system and method of injecting a gas enriched and/or emulsified first liquid into a second liquid is disclosed. The injection can cause generation of a high density of bubbles having a mean diameter of a selected size. The mean diameter of the bubbles can be selected and varied based on the characteristics of the injection system.

Generation of bubbles is disclosed to occur within a flow of an aqueous fluid. The bubbles may be formed within a tube of a selected diameter and the bubbles are controlled to exit the tube at a selected diameter. Generally, bubbles are formed to include a diameter of less than 1 millimeter, including less than about 20 microns.

Disclosed is a system to generate bubbles. The bubbles may be formed to include a substantially or medically pure gas. The bubbles may be formed on demand and in a selected small size.

Controlled nucleation from gas-supersaturated liquid

Catheters for infusion of cardiovascular fluids into blood are disclosed. The cardiovascular fluid may, for example, comprise water highly supersaturated with a gas such as oxygen. Each catheter comprises one or more capillary tubings (or capillaries) through which a cardiovascular fluid flows. The distal end of each capillary is mounted (e.g., potted) preferably flush with an external surface of a catheter sidewall, while the proximal end of each capillary is in fluid communication with a cardiovascular fluid flowing through the lumen of the catheter. The combination of the catheter shape and the orientation of the distal end of each capillary relative to the longitudinal axis of the catheter provides control over the mixing pattern of the cardiovascular fluid with blood flowing within a vascular space such as an aorta.

Method and apparatus to generate bubbles in a material

A gas-enriched fluid is provided by the combination of a first fluid, such as a patient's blood, with a second gas-supersaturated fluid, such as an oxygen supersaturated fluid. In this example, a catheter assembly includes a portion that receives the patient's blood from a pump and that receives the oxygen supersaturated fluid from an appropriate fluid source. The oxygen supersaturated fluid is advantageously combined with the blood in an area of laminar flow, and then this gas-enriched fluid is delivered to the patient through an appropriate lumen coupled to the portion of the catheter assembly.

Method for the preparation and delivery of gas-enriched fluids

A membrane oxygenator may receive a supply of pressurized oxygen and a supply of pressurized fluid, such as water or blood. In one example, a plurality of tubular membranes are disposed in a housing, where the pressurized fluid is delivered into the tubular membranes and where the pressurized oxygen is delivered into the area surrounding the tubular membranes. The oxygen diffuses through the membranes of the oxygenator to produce an oxygenated fluid. Advantageously, the oxygenated fluid is oxygen-saturated and delivered to a high pressure vessel where it may be stored until it is delivered to a patient.

Method for enriching a fluid with oxygen

An apparatus and method for delivering a high partial pressure of a gas into a liquid. The apparatus has a gas transfer device with a housing that includes upstream and downstream regions, between which there is located a gas-liquid contacting region with contacting members such as hollow microporous fibers. A reservoir of gas supplies the gas at a high pressure (P) to a flask of gas-depleted liquid and to the gas transfer device The reservoir of gas provides hydrostatic pressure for urging the liquid through the contacting members and propelling the gas around the contacting members so that the gas does not diffuse across the contacting members . The gas-enriched liquid is then ducted to a high resistance delivery channel for administration to a site of interest without effervescence, bubble formation, or significant disruption of laminar flow.

High pressure gas exchanger

A new footwear, such as a shoe or boot, with heated sole for helping keep a wearer's foot warm, especially in cold weather. The inventive device includes a footwear member having a sole and an upper portion for accepting a foot. The heel of the sole has a cavity therein with the lower surface of the heel having an opening into the cavity. A heel door is pivotally coupled to the lower surface of the heel for substantially closing the opening into the cavity. An elongate heating coil is provided within the interior of the sole for providing heat to the footwear when powered. Disposed within the cavity of the heel is a power source electrically coupled to the heating coil to provide power to the heating coil.
