A throttle body for an automobile includes a throttle shaft defining a rotational axis. The throttle shaft includes deformable members integrally formed about an exterior surface of the throttle shaft. A housing includes a bore. The throttle shaft extends through the bore with the deformable member partially-located within the bore. A bearing includes an inner surface and an outer surface. The bearing inner surface forms a press-fit connection with the deformable members to substantially prevent movement between the throttle shaft and the bearing in a direction parallel to the rotational axis.

Throttle body and method of assembly

A throttle body for an automobile includes a housing defining a plurality of bores separated by a central wall. A passageway is defined through the central wall. A shaft is rotatably received within the passageway. A plurality of plates is coupled with the shaft. A contacting preventing means is configured to selectively engage the shaft upon deflection of the shaft in the region of the central wall to prevent contact between the shaft and the housing.

Apparatus for controlling throttle shaft deflection and friction in dual bore throttle bodies

A throttle body for an automobile and a method of assembly of a throttle body are provided. The throttle body includes a throttle shaft defining a rotational axis, a housing having a bore, a deformable member located on the throttle shaft and at least partially-located within the bore, and a bearing having an inner surface and an outer surface. The bearing inner surface forms a press-fit connection with the deformable member to substantially prevent movement between the throttle shaft and the bearing in a direction parallel to the rotational axis.

An electronic throttle body uses a spring and an insert to generate a force tending to oppose the motion of opening a throttle. The insert locates and centers the coils of the spring and also acts during assembly to place the proper amount of torsion on the spring and the throttle body system. Once a throttle body motor or other force ceases to exert force against the spring, the spring causes the throttle to close.

An electronic throttle control system having a housing and cover member with a throttle valve, gear mechanism, motor, and failsafe or default mechanism. A spring member positioned between the housing and sector gear member which is attached to the throttle valve shaft, biases the throttle valve plate member toward the closed position. A spring-biased plunger member biases the throttle plate member from its closed position to a default or &ldquo;limp-home&rdquo; position. In order to reduce contact between the spring member of the default mechanism and the plunger member, the spring member can have an hourglass shape and/or the outer surface of the plunger member can be minimized.

Electronic throttle body with low friction default mechanism

An electronic throttle control system having a housing and cover member with a throttle valve, gear mechanism, motor, and failsafe mechanism. A spring member positioned between the housing and sector gear member which is attached to the throttle valve shaft, biases the throttle valve plate member toward the closed position. A spring-biased plunger member biases the throttle plate member from its closed position to a default or &ldquo;limp-home&rdquo; position. A stop shoulder on the sector gear is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the plunger mechanism midway through the default range of travel of the sector gear and plunger member. This reduces stresses on the components and minimizes friction and wear on the gear train mechanism.

An electronic throttle control system with a plastic composite housing member and injection molded motor assembly. The motor assembly is preassembled with a gear shaft member to a metal mounting plate which in turn is injection molded into the composite housing member. A portion of the motor is secured to the electronic throttle control housing during the injection molding process. The distance between the gear shaft member and motor remains constant.

A modular electronic throttle valve system for an internal combustion engine. A modular subassembly including at least a housing, motor, gear train and electronic sensors are mated with a two-piece air passageway subassembly. Bearings on the throttle shaft hold the throttle shaft in position in the clamshell member. A throttle shaft and throttle valve plate are either positioned in the modular subassembly with the housing, motor, gear train and electronic sensors, or included in the clamshell subassembly with a coupling member. The clamshell member and modular housing are secured together to form the completed electronic throttle control mechanism.

The housing, cover member and other components are made of a plastic composite material. A spring-biased plunger member biases the throttle plate member from its closed position to a default or &ldquo;limp-home&rdquo; position. A metal reinforcing plate is molded into the cover member in order to keep the gears in alignment and maintain proper gear positioning during high temperature fluctuations.

Disclosed herein is a throttle return spring assembly for use in an electronic throttle unit having a throat and a valve rotatably fixed within the throat to close and open the throat. The throttle return spring assembly includes a shaft extending along a rotation axis and connected to the valve for opening and closing the throat of the throttle. A return spring has a first leg connected to the shaft and a second leg extending axially into an opening of a guide. The guide allows rotation of the return spring about the rotation axis and restricts lateral translation of the return spring. The guide has an arcuate inner radial wall defining a catch projecting radially inward. The return spring is wound by rotating the second leg to follow the arcuate surface and engage the catch. A special winding tool having a radial slot which engages the second leg can be piloted about the end of the shaft to wind the return spring. A dust cap covers the return spring and has an integral stop member to prevent the return spring from disengaging the catch and uncoiling.

The housing, cover member and other components are made of a plastic composite material. A spring member positioned between the housing and sector gear member which is attached to the throttle valve shaft, biases the throttle valve plate member toward the closed position. A spring-biased plunger member biases the throttle plate member from its closed position to a default or &ldquo;limp-home&rdquo; position. Several of the components, such as the motor holder, electrical connectors and housing for the throttle position sensor (TPS), are molded together into the cover member to form an integrated modular assembly. This reduces the cost and weight and improves the reliability and overall size of the mechanism.

A throttle body (11) has a through-bore (18), a circular throttle blade (20) of nominal uniform thickness is disposed within the through-bore and on a cylindrical shaft (22). The through-bore has two generally semi-circular ledges (56, 58) spaced upstream and downstream respectively from an imaginary flat plane that contains the shaft axis, each at a distance substantially equal to one-half the blade thickness. One ledge occupies essentially one semi-circumference of the through-bore for sealing with one of the opposite semi-circular perimeters of the throttle blade when the blade is closed, and the other occupies essentially an opposite semi-circumference of the through-bore for sealing with the other semi-circular perimeter of the blade when the blade is closed. The downstream ledge has an upstream facing surface that is flat and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, and the upstream ledge has a downstream facing surface that departs slightly from a planar one that is flat and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis so as to conform the upstream ledge to a like slight departure in shape of the corresponding semi-circular perimeter of the blade due to engine intake vacuum when the blade is closed.
