Disclosed are apparatus and methodology for an adjustable width foam mattress which involves the use of modified lateral or side edges of an engineered foam mattress. Such lateral portions include collapsible structures for lateral adjustment of the overall width of the mattress. While different shapes are possible, one exemplary arrangement includes plural elongated octagonally-shaped openings. The long sides of such elongated structures form stops against each other as they fill the void of the opening. The relatively shorter sides of such structures articulate during collapse to accommodate such movement. As a result, and as the long sides fill in voids, the support structure essentially switches uniformly from one density to another, when moved from its expanded to its compressed position. An inflatable/deflatable member may be used to assist with expansion and compression of a lateral support structure.

Adjustable width user support

Disclosed are apparatus and methodology for reducing humidity (i.e., moisture) and/or heat within and/or adjacent a patient support mattress, without requiring any electrical power. A spacer fabric is used to create a non-crushable area of support below a patient's core area, where moisture and heat more commonly buildup. Integrated air cells in the mattress have resilient elements such as open-celled foam interiors. The air cells are connected by air tubing to the spacer fabric, and the mattress is otherwise vented externally from the spacer fabric. As a result, the patient's movement causes air to be expelled from or drawn into the air cells, which in turn results in air movement in the spacer fabric below a patient or user, resulting in cooling effects by removing moisture and/or heat, all without requiring external or internal electrical power.

Self-powered microclimate controlled mattress

A mattress cover is disclosed for redirecting shear on a patient's skin away from the areas of the body relatively more likely to develop decubitus ulcers. The mattress cover includes an upper portion designed to cover the topside of a mattress, and at least one shear transfer zone attached to an underside of the upper portion of the mattress cover. The shear transfer zone(s) may be made of a low shear material so as to create a low friction interface between the mattress and the mattress cover to reduce shear forces exerted by the mattress. Additionally, the shear transfer zone(s) may be arranged such that a large portion of the shear forces exerted by the mattress can be redirected to areas of the body that are relatively less likely to develop decubitus ulcers.

Shear reducing mattress cover

An insert for a bed facilitates use of a mattress having one cross-sectional profile with a bed frame having a different cross-sectional profile. An insert includes a base extending between sidewalls which have various contoured surfaces. The contoured sidewall surfaces enable the insert to be disposed in a bed frame in association with a mattress. Inner surfaces of the sidewalls are configured to accommodate receipt of a mattress while outer surfaces of the sidewalls are configured for the insert to be disposed in a bed frame. The surface sidewalls may further be configured to provide the insert with a safety feature which prevents or reduces the likelihood of a user falling from the side of a mattress associated with the insert.

Bed insert

A foam chair cushion having transverse support ribs is provided for reduction of shear stress between a person's skin and the surface of the chair cushion. The chair cushion may include transverse, lateral support ribs upon the support surface of the cushion. The support ribs have a predetermined cross-sectional geometry that is curvilinear, with a superior aspect generally disposed for receipt of a person and a inferior aspect opposite. The inferior aspect of the cross-section of the support ribs may undercut the portion of the support ribs vertically above it. Having such cross-sectional geometry, the support ribs are directionally oriented, either toward the one end or the other of the chair cushion. The chair cushion may include support ribs that are directionally oriented toward the foot of the chair in regions adapted for the person's upper torso, buttocks, and lower legs, and directionally oriented toward the head of the chair in a region adapted for the person's thighs. The chair cushion may also include longitudinal cuts in the support surface, perpendicular to the transverse support ribs, thereby defining independent support cells upon the support surface.

Shear reducing chair cushion

The present invention relates to a needle-stick protector for an intravenous catheter having a body, a needle hub, a needle, and means for ensuring that the needle-stick protector is not removed from a catheter hub before the needle is fully retracted and locked in the body of the needle-stick protector.

Passive needle-stick protector

A foam mattress system having transverse support ribs is provided for reduction of shear stress between a person's skin and the surface of the mattress system. The mattress system may include a mattress to be used independent of other mattresses or springs, or a mattress pad to be used atop other mattresses or springs, and either may be used on both a flat bed and a bed with an inclined torso section. The mattress system includes transverse, lateral support ribs upon the support surface of the mattress. The support ribs have a predetermined cross-sectional geometry that is curvilinear with a superior aspect generally disposed for receipt of a person and a smaller inferior aspect opposite. The inferior aspect of the cross-section of the support ribs may undercut the portion of the support ribs vertically above it. Having such cross-sectional geometry, the support ribs are thereby directionally oriented, either toward the foot or toward the head of the mattress system. The mattress system may include support ribs that are directionally oriented toward the foot of the bed in regions adapted for the person's upper torso, buttocks, and lower legs, and directionally oriented toward the head of the bed in a region adapted for the person's thighs. The mattress system may also include longitudinal cuts in the support surface, perpendicular to the transverse support ribs, thereby defining independent support cells upon the support surface.
